I recently made a post about my mechanical tv and in it I mentioned that it’s hard to sync so I was wondering about the settings in the app I use to generate the signal (FreeNBTVGen). If anyone knows what the settings would be for a 7&1/4 inch (18.5cm) disk with 30 holes would be it would be much help submitted by /u/captainretro123 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Fan Dipole and Overhead Power Lines

This may be a newb question, but I am just getting into working HF and need some advice/wisdom. I am working on building a Fan Dipole to use on my HF radio; however, there are a set of overhead power lines and a pole with a transformer within 50ft of my shack. I am trying to figure out the best placement of the antenna; however, I am wanting to keep the coax run as short as possible. What (if any) adverse effects will the overhead power lines have on the antenna and/or radio is? Thanks in advance, 73s submitted by /u/GuitarKnight42977 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Have you tried Cloudlog? A Open source Self hosted logging platform.

I recently got back from a break and wanted to try out a new logger. Most logging software still looks like they crawled out of a Widnows XP Gateway PC, and although they work I was looking for something more "modern". I found this software online called "CloudLog", which is an open source "host it yourself" logging server with full lotw, qrz sync etc. This was perfect for me because I'm also into the whole server hosting stuff. Anyways, the bare linux docs weren't perfect, so I redid it for anyone else looking to try it out, not to shill my blog, but I made a decent write-up here: https://th ..read more

ARRL Cancels Magazine Deliveries

In today’s ARRL Letter, the heading “ARDC and ARRL Announce $2.1 Million for the Next Generation of Amateur Radio” caught my attention. I’m on the 3rd year of my 10th 3-year subscription and I was informed that my third and final year of the magazine would not be delivered unless I payed an additional $25. It was said that the ARRL was about $2M short of the funds needed to deliver all of the outstanding subscription obligations. Now this. Hmm The ARRL can kiss my ass now. They officially suck. They are in breach of contract on mine and about 100,000 other subscriptions now. If you think that ..read more

Iss problems, please help!

I tried everything, having different channels for the Doppler effect, tracking the iss with precision, going to a higher elevation, still little to no luck. I can only just barely key the repeater from time to time, but otherwise, I can't even get my call in. I am only transmitting 8 watts on a 3 element Yagi. What can I do so I can try and get a better contact? Better antenna? Higher elevation? ( No power output increase since 10 watts is my limit and there are no genuine 10 watts HTs.) submitted by /u/a_PersonUnknown [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Which is better: the ARRL Technician Manual or the Gordon West Technician Manual?

So I have seen a few posts about this from many years ago. They seem to have about the same amount of pages. Are there any real differences? I see more people recommending Gordon West's book plus Ham Radio 2.0 did some live streams and referred to the Gordon West book. It's pretty much the same price on Amazon. If you're going to say 1 is more technical... I want this to hopefully be a future reference for others. If someone only wants to pass the test and get some basic information, while someone else wants to know more about the history and details of ham radio... Which book is best for whi ..read more

Hi all, just wondering if i can get some help identifying these two different antennas with separate coaxials I know the previous owner of the home was in EMS - perhaps one or both are VHF of some type? Just need help identifying as I can connect the long pole antenna to my RTL-SDR and it seems to recieve HF-VHF (boy do I need filters). Thank you, I am new to all of this and am looking to figure out what I am dealing with before I look into constructing additional antennas. submitted by /u/yothrowawaps [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I travel a lot and so am out of range of my Allstar node at home, wondering if anyone has tied a PoC radio like a Inrico to a gateway to connect to a allstar node radio. I could put the Inrico mobile in the truck connect to Zello with a dedicated TG and it would be full time to my node If anyone here has tried this let me know submitted by /u/retiredff2016 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
