Hey everyone! So I've thought about buying the HYS uv25d. It boasts around 20 watts of power. There have been tests done online TO CONFIRM this.

The I was thinking of a survival antenna that you could throw way up into a tree SEE HERE:

As I explore more and learn more about HAM radio etc. being mobile is important out in the woods, but I've also considered buying the BTECH amplifier this this

I’m considering this radio with an iPhone based FT8 program. Has anyone done this recently? I see several Hams using the IC 705 for this but not the 6100. I just want to get the correct cables to get it working.

Been running Hamfclock ver 3 for a while on a inovota Quadra. No issues until a few days ago. Instead of a map I get the error message "Countries N map: file is short". Any ideas?

Hi, I’m studying to take the technician and general exams with a few friends (same day, with luck), and I’d like to ask about decent, but budget friendly equipment.
I have my GMRS license, and a mobile mount radio and base station and HT for that service, and a CB (all jeep mounted), and I’d like to get comparable gear for the ham bands that I’ll be able to access as a tech and general-class ham.
Tl;dr: what’s decent ‘starter kit’ for being able to access the bands I’ll be able to use that is mobile-mountable and useful at home as well?
Thanks, in advance.

HI guys - -IM not ready to do it yet, but I am looking for ideas and suggestions to build a triband beam that is light and easy to handle -- wire beam with some kind of support is fine with me -- I'd like to get away with mounting on a mast rather than a tower if i can -- Suggestions?
Also, are there discord servers, chat rooms, forums or email lists about antennas, and ham radio in general that you use / recommend?
thanks
TIM

I've been chasing some really nasty 120 pulse-per-second RFI in my neighborhood for about the last 2 months, with a ticket open with PG&E now since March 12. I've gone as far as looking for a hot insulator with a thermal camera and developing software to automatically sample and graph the intensity of the pulse noise once a minute. The whole sordid backstory so far is here: https://n6ol.us/2024/04/28/pge-powerline-noise-the-story-so-far/
The trouble is that PG&E, despite surely knowing that an insulator behaving like a spark-gap transmitter can be an early sign of equipment that's lik ..read more

I'm looking at getting my first 'real' transceiver (not an HT or a kit) but all the new ones look like just a big block with a big screen on them. None of them scratch the itch for me. I want all knobs and switches and dials, not just another screen to look at.
I saw there was the "TR-45" made by another ham, and it looks excellent but not available yet.
It's difficult to find detailed information or reviews on old radios though, not like the hundreds of videos on new stuff that you can find all over YouTube.
I want to use it almost entirely for CW but being able to use it for anything else w ..read more

I am wanting to buy an already assembled NanoVNA. Looking for one that doesn't use SMA connectors if possible. I see a lot of different models...SMA is fine if that's the only option. R&L electronics has three or four different models....$69, $89, $130 not sure from the descriptions what the diff is. I'd like to measure SWR on HF, VHF, and UHF antennas. I'd like to use it to scan a EFHW or EFRW and see where the resonant dips are.
What other attachments, accessories, cables come in handy with a NanoVNA?
Recommendations?
Thanks

I bought a Icom 706-MKIIG a few months as a backup radio and just started putting it to use.
I noticed the fan turns on an off frequently, including when the radio is idle in RX.
It is configured for FT8 with less than 20 watts out (power level 3) and zero ALC. The fan also runs during TX FT8.
Does this sound like normal radio behavior? I presume the fan will run when the radio gets warm, but it should not be warm during RX and 20 watts out is low ...
