Hello. My 10 years old daughter wants a set of walkie talkies for Chrismas. The Chinese noname ones off amazon we had in the past are not worth it, sp I thought maybe it's time for a real one that actually works. What would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

The other end of this is something you plug into a 12v port in your car.
I want to get another one of these so I can modify it and hook it up to a LifePO4 battery.

I am looking at SteppIR BigIR as a candidate for a 6-80m vertical for the shack. Has anyone here owned one before? I am concerned about the assembly process and all its radials. The plan is to install it on the roof (it's a metal roof). There is very little documentation on the requirements for setting this up. Do you think the metal roof is going to interfere with the radials? Also, how would you approach guying the antenna on a roof? I better make sure it won't fall off in strong winds.
Any tips and comments would be appreciated.

Is there such a thing? I just built my first slim jim and I really like it.
I was having a conversation with someone about it and he suggested building a stacked slim-jim (not a dual bander). I thought it sounded interesting and started my search for plans, but so far have found nothing.
I quizzed an AI bot and was given a lot of info about them but I still can't find a photo. Anyone ever heard of such a thing? It seems entirely possible. Both antennas would need to be identical, the spacing and phasing harness would need to precise.
I don't see this being a big deal to build, but I'm new at ..read more

Is it me or do other people in the US or specifically Colorado or even more specifically Colorado Springs are unable to communicate with Oceana (Australia). My rig is FT-DX10, antenna is 53 foot EFHW running north to south. I live right up against Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs. If you are familiar with COS I am right next to the zoo.
I am able to ft8/ft4 to Hawaii, Japan, Korea and China. But for over a year since a became a ham I have never heard a single station in Australia and all through out that region.
I suspect my signal is getting blocked in the southwest direction but is goo ..read more

Hi everyone I just bought these walkie talkies from Amazon and i saw the light was on when randomly going through channels so I pressed the button that made a static sound (later found out thats the moni button) and I actually heard people talking and Morse code. I was listening then I accidentally pressed the talk button and idk if it can send out a frequency when pressing both buttons that they could possibly hear because they started saying something about a broadcast after that and I’m kind of worried maybe I got onto a channel I’m not supposed to be on and broadcasted and I could be ..read more

New Technician here. Not totally ignorant of RF communications after 25+ years in public safety and various roles related to comms. But D-Star and the SkyBridge Max are just beyond me apparently.
Have a ID-52a Plus. 2m and 70cm working fine via local repeaters. Was hoping to “master” D-Star on that before moving to mobile.
Registered with D-Star and DMR. Got the skybridge connected to my network. But am unsure where to go from here. At a loss. Documentation for SkyBridge is very limited unless I pay another $400+ for their online “training”. YouTube has provided some insights. But have yet to ..read more

I had this idea that I want to hear your opinions about.
Let's say an inverter in a solar panel + batteries setup is emitting HF noise on the AC side. Long wires connect it to whatever electric devices that use the 230V. A simple low pass filter makes the inverter act up, probably because it does not like an inductive load.
But what if I decide to not care about noise that is outside my ham radio bands? Can I filter out just for example 3.5-3.8MHz from the AC - for example a band pass filter directly across the power line?
