Where to place a repeater

I posted something similar to this under "Unable to test a repeater" but nobody responded to I'm going to try here. "I've ordered 2 1000G Plus and want to connect them as a repeater, I'm getting the Icom IASDUP 1037 Duplexer, and the TRAM 1486 antenna with M&P cable. I'm thinking about putting it in my "Car Port" which has a 14' roof and I was going to raise the antenna another 10'. So that would give me 25' in height. I'm at the top of a hill and I believe 25' would be above any structure. The carport is 200' from my house so I shouldn't get much interference. If that doesn't work I'll mo ..read more

In the middle of Warren county, been monitoring a repeater on 21 - 462.700. Many people from all over the region on it throughout the day and especially evening. Signal has been very strong from my location, figure it's somewhat close. However so far I can't seem to identify it to determine access requirements. Not been able to find in the repeater listing's here. Anyone have info on this one/join requirements ..read more

GMRS on a Road Trip?

I have a new GMRS license. I've got an 1,800 mile one way trip from Oregon to Kansas coming up. Is this service used at all on the road? Is it worth purchasing a mobile for the road? Obviously, I can use the rig and service at my destination. I'm wondering if it's worth a head start before I leave.   Thank you,   Ken ..read more

Since I often see posts from people thinking out loud, or whom just got a license and got into radio, proposing to do some brand-new wild and crazy idea that will shock the world.....  There is little new and shocking about how and what we can do with radio, both in HAM and GMRS. It's all been tried in one way or another. Now, that's not discouragement, but so many wild ideas get a critical response when the wild eyed newbies and inexperienced folks get to thinking with a keyboard. How about we proactively talk about unique setups or experiments we may done or seen. This way when Cleetus ..read more

We recently relocated to Oregon from Buffalo, NY, and find ourselves in very different terrain. We camp and geocache, so we find ourselves without cell signal often. I have a license (WRDZ 350), which I obtained 2 or 3 years ago, but only because the walkie-talkie like 2-way radios we have do have some channels that are on GMRS frequencies. We only used them for close communication while in woods caching with other friends or while camping. We have never used a repeater. Now that we are here and the terrain is much different, we find ourselves without cell signal often as we travel. For safety ..read more

Recommendation for a GMRS antenna for a sailboat

My sailboat has a marine VHF radio with transom-mounted VHF antenna, which is a terrible place to mount an antenna on a sailboat. My mast is down right now, and I am planning to install a new VHF antenna on the mast head before putting up the mast again. Shakespeare sells masthead antennas that seem to be what "everyone" uses for marine VHF on inland waters. I sail on the Great Salt Lake, so the maximum distance between two boats is going to be a little under 40 miles. And one would never be more than about 35 miles from either of the two shore stations (the two harbors). With a transom mounte ..read more

Pennsylvania state senate passed a bill to disallow mobile usage. Some wording was changed to disallow mobile radio usage aimed at amateur radio.   If the governor signs this bill with the wording. You as a gmrs/cb user will not be able to legally use your mobile radio on the road. This excludes public safety and commercial operators like taxi cabs.   REDDIT POST with the information.   https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/s/TuKdon2Df3     Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk     ..read more
