New digital movie poster display DIY guide & library

Hi everyone, I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on that may be of interest to anyone looking to add a digital movie poster display to their home theater. This started as a hobby project for myself and I thought the result—and process—might be useful to other movie fans. I wanted to turn an unused TV into a poster-sized display for movie poster art, rather than buying a premade solution, which tend to be pretty spendy. I also wanted this system to be better than the old “JPEGs on a USB stick” approach, so I figured out the best way to vertically mount a TV and connect to a cloud-ba ..read more

HomePods for a home theater

Does anyone here use a pair of HomePods as their primary speakers for their home theater? I know majority of the people here have massive dedicated spaces for their home movie watching experience, but for someone who doesn't have a really big space and wants to upgrade from a Yamaha 107 soundbar, how are the HomePods as a stereo pair for your movies? I already own one HomePod, but im considering on getting another and creating a stereo pair, the one I have already sounds better than my soundbar, the bass is excellent imo, and the voice clarity is leaps better, plus, I'll be able to route all ..read more

This is what happens to 35mm film that went bad

Many years ago, a friend of mine gave me this 35mm trailer of The Day the Earth Stood Still. It had this awful vinegar smell. It was so bad that when I first took it home it permeated the whole house. I had to put it in a container to keep the thing from smelling. Here it is years later and I'm cleaning the house of things that I no longer want. The trailer was one of them. I opened it up for the first time and the film was so bad that it was literally crumbling, like leaves when you walk under them. You couldn't unravel the film from the spool, it was sticking to itself. I have other film st ..read more

I seem to remember around '02, Costco selling uber widescreen tvs. So basically a 2.39:1 film would not have black bars above or below the picture. Does anyone remember what brand those were, or if any are still sold anywhere? I am lucking out on my own search ..read more

Recently upgraded to a Sony OLED and while I was at BestBuy yesterday I spontaneously picked up a new Samsung HW-Q930C soundbar in the hopes of upgrading my sound system at the same time. But after getting home and doing some research, I have more questions than answers as to whether or not I actually did so. I would like to get some help from forum members on the following questions. Firstly, I currently have a 5.1 setup with a Sony receiver and Advent speakers and a Klipsch subwoofer. Am I going to get better sound with the Atmos soundbar or is wired 5.1 still better? Second, I have vaulte ..read more

Question about turntable sound from a receiver

I have a question regarding turntable sound from a receiver. I currently have Onkyo TX-NR575 receiver and a Denon DP-300F turntable. The turntable is 12 years old and the receiver is 6 years old. I currently have to have the sound cranked at 45-50 in order to hear the music. Is there anything I can do to make the sound better and at lower volume? It hasn't really bothered me that much, but now that I've got the green marble vinyl of R.E.M.'s UP, I would like to work on this. My speaker set up is a 7 speaker Sonance system with true speakers in the ceiling. I will take and post it shortly. Than ..read more

Audio issues—suggestions needed

I’ve been having strange audio issues that I cannot figure out. When I play Blu-ray discs, sometimes they play perfectly. At other times, the picture is fine (I’ve never had trouble with the picture) but the audio is gone. I’ve tracked no particular pattern to this. Everything can work fine for several days in a row, and then the sound might cut out for a few days. Or it can alternate. When the sound goes, the only way I’ve discovered to get it to play is to turn everything off—the Blu-ray player, receiver amp, and TV—wait 10 seconds, and then turn everything back on again. Sometimes I have t ..read more
