Someone in the comments of a news article asked me what I paid for my setup. The LG projector was on sale $1,099 but now $1,296 and the cinema-grade screen was $300. When lights go off, it looks almost as good as my LG TV. 120" screen with a 4K HDR DLP projector.     ..read more

Upscaling (1080p) DVD player running DVDs at half resolution

I have a Xenta VT-S205 1080p upscaling DVD player.   It was purchased in December 2013 for £15 from Ebuyer.   It hasn't been used in many years.   I plugged it in today (via. several different HDMI cables) into a Samsung UE46ES5500 TV (a 2012 model). I've also tried two other HD TVs.   All DVDs appear extremely pixelated. As in, below the standard DVD-Video resolution of 576p. They appear to be playing in half resolution.   There aren't many settings to change but those that do exist are all set correctly: Aspect Radio: 16:9 View Mode: Original (not Pan & Scan or ..read more

In-wall speakers in pre-wired home

My home was pre-wired for 5.1 surround, which I would like to put some in-wall speakers in, but I'm kind of confused on how this will work. I've attached a photo from when the house was just framed so you can visualize this easier. You're looking at the center channel up top (cropped the others out). So, they've put these outlet boxes in right on the studs where the wires are coming up through. How do I deal with this with in-wall speakers? do I have to remove these boxes somehow? I've also read that in-walls don't do great right up on the stud? In my case that's where all of these are. Thanks ..read more

Hisense ULED Premium 65" U8G Quantum Series (65U8G, 2021 Model) VIZIO SB46514-F6 46" 5.1.4 Premium Home Theater Sound System.   I have to say this is one of the best pictures on a TV that I've seen and combined with the Vizio surround sound system, it is pretty nice for movies and streaming. HDR Vision/HDR 10/HDR 10+/IMAX Enhanced are all breathtaking. Cable TV, well, depending on how the show/sporting event was recorded, it can be so-so to pretty good. I got this to stream as I will be cutting the cord at some point. I probably could have gotten a better TV for hundreds more, but I'm hap ..read more

Connecting a Dolby Atmos soundbar to an older TV - will optical or HDMI ARC from the TV give met Atmos sound?

I am considering getting a Dolby Atmos soundbar. I have limited space and budget, and I have read good reviews on several models that meet my value/price ratio. Specifically, I'm looking at the LG SN7Y. I also have a 5 year old LG TV. It supports HDMI ARC and optical out, and Dolby Vision (and earlier version, not supported by Xbox). I also have an Xbox One X, an older Roku Ultra, and a Switch.   So here's my question... Can I get Atmos to work by using the optical passthru from the TV to the soundbar?   I have read that devices must be plugged directly into the soundbar for Atmos to ..read more

I bought this set https://eu.onkyo.com/nl-NL/solr-hide/ht-s5805-b/p/157320 I think back in 2017 and at least once a year I will go to watch something and there will be no audio. The first time it happened I thought it was broken I checked the cables and everything and I finally found some post online somewhere about the same thing happening and a "reset" fixing it, so that's what I did.     This set is hooked up to everything, so my Xbox One X, Nvidia Shield Pro, Cable Media box etc and I use it almost daily, so it's really annoying. Anyway now tomorrow I will have to go t ..read more

Hi, we are finalizing the purchase of a home, the current owner said that they would take with them all the speakers, projector, projector mount and projector screen in the theater room and patch up all the holes. I am very new to theater room installation and need some help from you guys in terms of deciding how much effort/cost it will be for me to install my own setup on what is left in this theater room in our new home. We are open to hiring professionals but would like to know whether it will be more economical for us just to buy all the setup from the current owner. Thanks ..read more

Should I upgrade my AV Receiver?
Neowin » Home Theatre

I have the Onkyo TX-NR509 5.1 AV Receiver which I've own for about 10 years now. For over 5 years, I've had random audio dropouts with this receiver when using the HDMI ports. And here's the funny thing, it happens once in a blue moon... maybe once every 6 months or so. That's how rare it is. And in the over 5 years it has been happening, it hasn't gotten worse. Truth be told, deep down inside, I've hoping that it does get worse so it gives me a reason to upgrade to a 4K AVR, but it still only happens rarely. I've switched to different cables, different ports and even upgraded to a 4K TV a cou ..read more
