Audi/VW Oil Coolers’ Importance And Operation
Import Car Magazine
by Andrew Markel

When VW engines were air-cooled, they had a substantial oil cooler compared to other engines of the day that might not have an oil cooler. With an air-cooled engine, the oil is essentially coolant. For today’s water-cooled engines, the oil is still a coolant that is cooled by the engine coolant. Many European and domestic vehicles have adopted water-to-oil coolers because they are very efficient at getting the oil to temperature and keeping it in a specific temperature range. This is critical for engines that use lighter-weight oils. The integration with the oil cooler and cartridge oil filter ..read more

Many consumers still believe that an aftermarket auto part is inferior to an OE manufacturer replacement part, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, many aftermarket auto part manufacturers are actually improving and correcting known failure points on parts, in many cases making them better than the same OE counterpart. This is because aftermarket manufacturers reverse engineer OEM parts, allowing these manufacturers to identify their strengths and weaknesses. That’s especially good news for Tesla S owners, as many of these drivers have reported numerous issues with the front s ..read more

Oil Level Sensors – More Than A Warning Light
Import Car Magazine
by Andrew Markel

Oil level sensors have been used on import and domestic cars for more than a decade. Some of the first applications only monitored if the oil level was low using a switch attached to a float. The sensor would just trigger a message or light in the instrument cluster and only measured oil levels when the engine was not running. Modern oil level sensors measure the oil level differently so the oil level can be measured while the engine is running. Some sensors use an electrical resistance method that works the same way as a mass airflow sensor. As less of the sensor is covered by oil, the resis ..read more
