Golden Pies: The Best Board Games of 2023
Board Game Feast

While the proverbial oven of 2023 continues to cool down (insofar as I continue to write it in date fields), one more slice of pie remains: it’s the return of the Golden Pie Game of the Year awards. It’s been a while since I’ve taken the time to celebrate my favorite games, partly in anxiety of not having played enough of them. Most of these weren’t even released in 2023, but board games are particularly sensitive to supply and demand, both of physical copies and of eager players. In no particular order, these were my favorite games, first experienced in 2023. Point City Designers: Molly Jo ..read more

Gingerboard 2023: Mycelia
Board Game Feast

Welcome to 2024 and a new chance to bask in the halo of exciting potentials and eager resolutions. Before they begin to dim, it’s time to look back at one last feast for 2023. For the last several years I’ve spent the holiday break working on a board game themed gingerbread creation. I broadly don’t have a lot of interest in perfect recreations of baked facsimiles, of cake entombed in a prison of fondant and rice krispies. But gingerbread is my favourite canvas, the spiced cookie in balance with the sweet icing, along with a charcuterie of candy treats. 2023’s gingerboard creation is ..read more

2023 in feasts

As we close the lid on 2023 and anticipate whether it has one last box fart for us, I wanted to look back on the year and what I’ve achieved. While I’ve struggled to update this blog regularly, between family commitments and lapses in inspiration, at the very least I wanted this new version of the site to stand as a portfolio of my work. I’m incredibly proud of the work I’ve done and the skills I’ve learned, and I think there’s still a lot of potential in the concept of Board Game Feast, bringing people together through games and food. But I’m still trying to figure out the best format to refl ..read more

The One Ring Pizza Pretzels
Board Game Feast

Stuff em, top em, twist them in a knot, there’s lots of ways to dress a pretzel. For today’s feast I’ve been experimenting with my favourite pretzel recipe in a new form, in honor of the new set of cards for Magic the Gathering: Tales of Middle Earth. The ring tempts you I’ve been a Tolkien fan since the Peter Jackson films (discounting a failed attempt to read the novels in primary school), and it’s long been my geek franchise of choice. Magic the Gathering I have a more tumultuous relationship with – while I love the core mechanics, there are so many barriers that get in the way of that enjo ..read more

30 mins 8 servings Terraforming Mars, Ares Expedition, On Mars Easy Game night snacks don’t have to be rocket science, here’s a simple treat you can make to terraform your table and your tastebuds. While Mars Bar Slice comes in various forms, this version is a sweet chocolatey twist on Rice Krispie treats, based on my Grandmother’s recipe. Simply melt down some Mars Bars (or other candy bar of your choice), mix it in with rice krispies and top with more melted chocolate. You can further customize your creation and celebrate Mars’ newfound greenery, with sprinkles or mint chips on t ..read more

On tables and contents: Board Game Feast 2.0

Were you to open a book on the history of human social interactions and look at the table of contents, you’ll likely find a large proportion dedicated to the contents of tables. So many activities core to our relationships to each other happen seated at tables (or in bed…unless you’re feeling a little adventurous). A table may physically separate those seated but what’s ON that table brings them closer together. Whether it’s with the fun of a game, or a tasty meal, the contents may be ephemeral but the social connections they build create lasting memories. That may all sound a little self-ind ..read more

Recipe: Caramelized Carrots with Carrot-top Green Goddess Dressing
Board Game Feast
by Daniel Wynter

Carrots are the heart of board game food resources, whether it’s cultivated on your cardboard farm, transported and traded on long voyages, or cooked up as a creature comfort. Buying carrots by the bunch it always seemed such a waste to discard the lush greenery on top and much like punishing euro games about feeding your family, one should always be efficient about using every resource. This recipe was originally utilized for my Cascadia feasts, and typically paired with salmon (see my accompanying recipe HERE). But it’s too good to limit to just the one dish, so I’ve broken it out to showcas ..read more

Taking Oaths and Baking Games

Cole Wehrle’s Root is a masterpiece in wordless world building. Tooled with the deviously asymmetric faction abilities and the whimsically delightful artwork of Kyle Ferrin (plus a few evocative titles), players can only imagine the rich history of the surprisingly ferocious woodland inhabitants. However Root is a knife fight in a phone booth compared to the sprawling open world of possibility in Oath: Chronicles of Empire & Exile. I’ve had mixed experiences with the various tabletop collaborations between Cole and Leder Games (Root, Vast, Oath) from bad teachers and sore losers, to involv ..read more

If you’ve been following my content for any amount of time, you should know what a special place Cascadia has for me. It’s where our family decided to make our new life here in the Pacific North West; It was the first game I reviewed for my channel; It was the first episode of my podcast that we had guests for. It helps that the game itself is pretty great too. It’s been a pleasure to be part of the community coming together for the love of this game. I was excited for the team behind Cascadia when it recently won the Spiel des Jahres, so I decided to revisit my original feast and tweak it to ..read more

Update: This recipe and all my others have now been converted to a traditional printer/browser friendly format, but I’m leaving the original intro for posterity. I’ve not done a great job of keeping my promise to keep this blog updated. Other commitments continue to make keeping a consistent content schedule difficult. But I’ve continued to have a lot of fun experimenting with dishes and formats. I’ve been live-streaming on Twitch semi-regularly, recording the Omnigamers Club Podcast every couple of weeks, and trying to get back into the routine of posting traditional review videos. I’m still ..read more
