Hello Mr. Dunmunro, thanks for this precise detail. Brennecke, after having evaluated both accounts, concluded he found no reason for dismissing them and also listed all possible reasons for Lütjens to reject Lindemann request: ammunition and fuel consumption, danger of other British units in proximity, long chase eastward towards Home Fleet and, mostly, SKL orders (not to engage battleship if not necessary to sink merchant ships). He added Marschall conversation with Lütjens before mission (Marschall got removed as Flottenchef for having sunk HMS Glorious at cost of damages to Scharnhorst) as ..read more

P.S. First hand eyewitness account about the discussion comes from helmsman Heinz Staats who was in the armored command centre and heard a conversation between Oels (I.O.) and an un-named officer from Lütjens staff about this episode. Also another un-named officer accounted about the "thick" air on bridge between Lindemann and Lütjens regarding the choice not to continue the battle. Source for both: J.Brennecke hans Staats was not an eyewitness to the discussion between Lutjens and Lindemann, so Staats' account is 2nd hand. The Dreadnought Era (1906-1921) • Dogger Bank from the German PoV - Part 1

Found this in my files. Given the dearth of information on Blucher's experience at Dogger Bank I thought it made sense to share it. Please read with care, however, as there are (unavoidably) a few incorrect assumptions and errors of recollection. Sometimes, the timeline of events can also be somewhat confusing. INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM THE SURVIVORS OF THE BLUCHER (Source: Naval Review) WAS in charge of the ship below the waterline and remained blow until the fumes of the lyddite got too bad. He went up to the upper conning tower, where he found the fumes also very bad. They had to come ou ..read more

The evidence for a Lutjens vis Lindemann argument over pursuing PoW is very weak and was not mentioned by any of the 5 Bismarck survivors who made it back to to debriefed by the KM. Hence Raeder had no basis for such an assumption. There are nevertheless many and persistent reports about an argument on this subject, initially highlighted post war by Grenfell in his book ''The Bismarck episode.'' This was the very first book I read about the Bismarck, at age 12 to 13 years, and it did leave a lasting impression on me.
