I may be a bit dense here, but surely the cheaper option is to just build more of the new Destoyers the RN have spent years developing as the base for this new ship but with a different weapons/electronics fit, rather than build from the ground up.
I believe Frigates and Destroyers can both perform pretty similar roles.
I may be talking arse here...

Plans unveiled to mark D-Day's 80th anniversary - Royal Navy
Major international commemorative events on both sides of the Channel will mark the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings.
D-Day 80 will be a large-scale celebration of those who ran the gauntlet of Hitler’s vaunted Atlantic Wall and helped begin the liberation of western Europe from the Nazi yoke.

So this article in the telegraph has brought the current plight of the RFA to the forefront which is highly unusual for a service that tends to operate in the back ground (often being labeled HMS and once even NHS).

Maritime trade is no longer important.
No threat to maritime trade exists.
No sophisticated weapons will ever be used at sea.
No ship can be defended against ballistic missile attack.
Ballistic missiles can easily hit ships.
Cruise missiles cannot be counter.
Anyone can buy a drone and sink any ship.
The lack of naval combat as part of the war in Ukraine shows that it is a thing of the past.
The fleet exist...

Why are they talking about a turf war with Holyrood? Defence is a reserved matter that the Scottish Parliament has no say in!
Why are they sending a DI from Police Scotland when this is in the jurisdiction of the Royal Navy Police I presume?
Why are they even sending a DI if it is a suspected drug overdose? Would they not stick the body into the freezer and make...

Haven’t seen a thread on this topic already, but the replacement for the Type 45 destroyer is apparently already deep into its concept phase.
Initial reports suggest that it is more likely to be cruiser-sized, displacing upwards of 10,000 tonnes and Navy Lookout have an interesting article speculating on side other options for the vessel.
