Hey AI—Why Not Teach Yourself to Help Mankind?

I guess the cautionary tale, these days, in the world of social media and online communications is artificial intelligence; beware. So many seemed to be obsessed with the idea that machine will mimic us in an uncontrollable way. A way that will almost begin thinking for itself and go in directions unwanted or unplanned. On the 26th of September, it will be thirty-two years that we have been ‘at this’; this ‘diabetes thing’. It has been one most remarkable ride. Not only have we meet some incredible people on this journey, I have learned a few things over this stretch of time. Many good, but also some painful lessons ..read more

Doc’s Checking Blood Sugars……Why is this Not a Thing?

Any time someone visits their health care professional for a wellness check, rest assured that certain testing; both diagnostic and otherwise will be performed.  It’s part of the process. “You know Doc, I have this calf muscle that has been bothering me for the past two weeks.”  The health professional will examine the area, and ..read more

You Deserve Some of the Pomp and Circumstance

I could never imagine what is like to have a disease that is constantly reminding of its existence at every chance it gets.  Lest those of us who don’t have it, ever forget, that 24/7/365.  I have written in the past about those who have diabetes going through life ‘with an asterisk”.  How amazing is it that it seems the Energizer Bunny has nothing on our kids living with diabetes.  They do not necessarily have to be overachievers, they just need to be able to function in this world dealing with everything they deal with. Now that I’m in my third decade (yeeeeeeeeesh ..read more

If not, by now, shortly, you and your child will have chosen where they will be attending college in the fall. What an exciting time! As you enjoy the excitement, and if you have a child with diabetes, the coming fall becomes a dreaded monster as you realize your child, AND THEIR DIABETES, will be left on their own without the help of mom and dad. How will this ever work? You got this, and so do they: your child is not the first to enjoy this rite of passage.  Millions have gone before, and so have many with diabetes. You can do this.  Discuss going away to colleg ..read more

For my part, I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of stars makes me dream.  Now, I am sure that Vincent Van Gogh was not thinking of diabetes when he jotted down this quote. Surely, he was marveling at the heavens above and all those stars in the sky.  Each is different, each burning brightly. Telehealth! But Would a Tele-support Group Work?

Especially during the time of COVID, it was not so uncommon to rely on doctor’s visits via what was called telehealth.  Actually, during COVID we had tele—everything.  Not only appointments at the Docs but conferences, lectures, school classes, and meetings were all moved to a virtual “Tele-world”. One article I read stated that Zoom grew 500% during the height of the pandemic. That’s a lot of participants. So I have a quick question today.  Knowing that the convenience of attending from home, along with the fact that some people like the autonomy, would you participate in a Zoo ..read more

PLEASE: Remember Surroundings And Timeframe When You Park

I have mentioned this topic before but it can never be overstated. With the winter break now over and kids heading back to school, every fiber in my ‘dad’ body begs me to plead with you to please be very alert on where you park and when at the time you arrive for classes. Many times you will arrive in a parking lot after a few classes have already started, and in the middle of the daytime, you may not be reflecting on how far away you actually are and the fact that your last class is at 6 pm, it will be pretty dark, and many of those same cars are now gone. There will be nothing but a healthy ..read more

We Were Promised a Cure…and…Yeah, Now What?
Diabetes Dad

We all heard it. We may have even said it based on what we were told by those ‘in the know.’ The cure for diabetes will be here in 5 years. I asked a top scientist once about this phrase, and his answer was enlightening, “There was a time that so much was happening in the world of diabetes that many in the scientific world truly believed; how could it NOT be here in 5 years?” I was even told that this would be the case, to my own peril, as I shared it with others, and worst yet, I believed it.  And it didn’t happen. Organizations even got behind beliefs like the Decade for a Cure.  ..read more
