William Rogers, a former sharpshooter in the English army, was attached to the Rifle Corps. He later joined the public service as an exterminator in Badulla.
A skilled hunter, elephants fell victim to his bullets most often. It is said that he killed over 1,400 elephants in his lifetime. This practice was opposed by the natives and the Sangha (Buddhist – monks), but Rogers reportedly ignored their protests.
In 1845, while traveling to work in Haputale, Rogers was struck by lightning and died suddenly. His friends transported his body out of the city and buried him in a grave.

Wawakale is a small reservoir located in the Wawakale area of Walapane. Fed by water from the springs of Wawakale, this small lake is a very beautiful place. Interestingly, Wawakale translates to “lake forest” in Sinhala.

Surrounded by a small forest on three sides and a small clay road on the other, the Wawakale lake borders the road. On the opposite side, there’s a Helmalu rice paddy that creates a beautiful view.
