590 Shockwave-Another thing I won't do again

Welp, I've got a friend I occasionally shoot with that says he's getting on in years and is trying out 'different' things. He let me shoot his Mossberg 590 Shockwave with 12 gauge slugs. Well, like the Ruger LCR .357 magnum with 158 grain cartridges, the Shockwave is something I'll not do again. The recoil of the Shockwave was awful. I thought I was holding it firmly but it came back in my hand and the safety ripped into the web of my right hand. I was seriously wishing for some shooting gloves. He had a green laser setup and I found the least objectionable way of shooting the thing was to ..read more

Old vs New 16s

I got these two out for the first time this week. Top is a 1924 vintage Parker "Trojan", below is a new CZ Sharptail, both 16 gauge. The CZ is heavier (feel, did not weigh them), has about an inch longer pull, and the barrels are set a little further apart. It is IC/Mod vs the Parker's Mod/Full. I was shooting RST 2 1/2" 7/8 oz #7 1/2 labeled 1,125 fps, light load in deference to the pre-1926 Parker. As you would expect, the new CZ feels a little chunky in comparison, but I really didn't notice it shouldering and firing at clay birds. Both pointed naturally and smoked birds. Should note that I ..read more

I've just purchased a 1983 vintage left-handed Remington 1100 with a 21'5" slug barrel. It's going to be my new "bedside" gun loaded with #1 Buckshot. I've been debating on whether I should add a 2 round magazine extension. taking capacity from 5 to 7 rounds. What do you think? Would you add the extension ..read more

Your thoughts on Browning BT-99 Trap shotgun w/factory recoil pad? Bass Pro Model Number 017054402 Particularly interested in the recoil of the newest models as I have some slight shoulder and arm nerve issues (post surgery 2 yrs ago) I don't want to aggravate. Shot one maybe 30 years ago prior to shoulder issues, was really impressed with it on trap field where 50 rds shot excellent. My Win 101 recoil is too much for me ..read more

Who Are The World’s Top Shotgun Engravers?

Shotguns engraved by world’s top shotgun engravers are highly coveted and those guns bring a financial premium when they are sold, but the top 5 engraver’s shotguns rarely trade - and are often hard to find. When it comes to ranking the world’s best shotgun engravers, from any objective criteria, the top Krieghoff engraver is G. Stoegner (aka G. Stogner). G. Stoegner, with 7 Krieghoff “Guns of the Year,” far more than any other engraver, has graced their guns, with deep detailed engraving, with little in the way of precious metal ‘frills’ - just pure classic deep engraving. What makes the G.St ..read more

I have a friend who has an 1894 and we're trying to figure out as much as we can about it. The barrels appear to be damascus. They have a pattern that looks like fingerprint swirls. The bottoms of the barrels are marked: I (or 1) /// A P I can find lots of information online about other marks corresponding to grades, type of steel, etc. but nothing I've found matches the marks on it. Any help ..read more
