Hi all! It’s my first post here, although I’ve had Labradors for 14+ years. I’ll try to keep it short! Two years ago I bought a ‘show type Labrador’. Advertised as show quality. Excellent pedigree, although the dam wasn’t ever shown and didn’t have a kennel name. The breeder knew I was a breeder. In fact, I already had a litter of my own Labradors at that point, although they were from lines of FtChs and I really wanted a show type (else I’d have kept one of my own!). My dam was more... Seeking bench/conformation stud with multiple generations of elite hip scores

Seeking conformation (AKA bench, show, English) stud dog (for breeding from, not to purchase) with an unusual requirement: He and both parents must have hip scores in the 0/0 to 2/2 range. Location and color are unimportant (other than no dogs in Russia please.) Many other requirements apply, of course. Am only listing this one requirement because it will undoubtedly eliminate most dogs. Am not in a rush as this search is for two breedings that are being planned well in advance. All help... Has anyone seen surprises in genetic COI vs pedigree COI?

Some DNA testing companies (Embark is probably the most popular one) provide genetic COI, which is profoundly different from COI calculated from pedigrees. Has anyone seen surprising or otherwise interesting genetic COI results vs pedigree COI ..read more

Dwarfism in Labradors

Hi I have been looking through the old posts regarding dwarfism - and as the few that I opened up appeared to have a few contentious replies (although now deleted) I didnt want to open up old posts. Today I saw a Labrador that was in my opinion (certainly not an expert on this element of course) a labrador with dwarfism. The owner seemed a little put out that I had asked what breed her dog was crossed with (as it was obviously labrador something!). She said it was full pedigree working... Im looking for a working line stud dog, but I do not have much knowledge on different lines and what they produce, so was wondering if anyone could help point me in the right direction? What im looking for in order to compliment my bitch is as follows: Calm, level-headed, and confident temperament. Keeps cool and doesn't panic when working. Fantastic pace and speed. Good structure, athletic and well muscled. Medium size (around 24-27kg preferably) Negative EBVs... Stud dog recommendations ..read more

I would love some help from the experts on this forum. I lost my third Lab bitch 4 years ago and haven't been ready to get my next until now. Her sire was Willowyck Jack Snipe and she was a good dog, constant and steady. I couldn't live without a dog so we have a Border Terrier bitch who has taught me a great deal! Please can you advise would it be better to get a dog with my BT bitch, she seems to prefer males, in fact she actively likes them? Whilst she is more circumspect with... Only one parent health checked

Hi all. I’m looking for a little help about health checks. My friend has been looking in several places to try and find a puppy. She had come up with a few, some of which I suggested she leave well alone for different reasons. One thing she has been told by the breeder of one litter was that if the Sire is completely health checked for everything and is clear the the Dam doesn’t need to be as it will make no difference health wise and even if there were anything genetic that the pup would... Good Morning, while working on my bitch's pedigree (using labrador.retriever.free.fr), I stumbled over some spelling mistakes - or maybe not :?: using the search button here wasn't helpful to this problem, so perhaps somebody could help? there is Saxigoe Solicitude (*<1954) vs. Staxigoe Snap (FTCh, *1967) now I'm asking myself whether both exist or one's *t* is missing, resp. the other's too much  googling brought myself to Labrador.net where both saxi/staxi exist as... Looking for Contact info for Silversnipe and Craighorn

I am from the US and will be in Scotland for a few weeks this summer and was hoping to visit a couple breeders/kennels. I don't know if that is common in the UK, but if possible I'd love to visit with Joe Maclure of Silversnipe and/or Tom Smith of Craighorn and was hoping someone on this forum might have contact info for either or both of them. My first labrador was sired by a Silversnipe dog who was sired by Craighorn Bracken, hence my interest. Let me know, and thanks ..read more

Picking a stud dog.

There have been a few posts recently about looking for a stud dog, so I thought I’d share a few thoughts. Usually I have a shortlist of dogs I like the look of, at least from a distance. So what happens now? Firstly I’m going onto the KC website to look at the health test results. If there is no hip, elbows and eye test results then they are crossed off my list! It’s that simple. I want to breed healthy pups, not risk blind cripples. DNA tests, I know what I want to see, but for one reason... Picking a stud dog ..read more
