DBT #281 Sacrifice
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper

Being Holy Week, I thought about doing a playlist of significant Christian tunes, and I still might.  My mind wandered to just the Sacrifice that was made on Good Friday, and Molly Brandt's song "I Surrender to the Night" came on and I said, yep that will be the first song.  This playlist is a cross section to recently added music to my digital library, so well find a sacrifice thread through them. 1) Surrender to the Night - Molly Brandt Last Friday we had a chance to see Minneapolis' Molly Brandt at the Root Note, and did grab a video.  We didn't buy a physical cd as we s ..read more

DBT #280 Women's Herstory Month 2024
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper
6d ago
My musician friend Beth Bombara shared a playlist (Spotify and Apple) streaming playlist for this month and I got me thinking what would be mine look like.  I tried to reach back to songs and artist that really have touched me over the many years, yet I tried to make it a little new for listening (which I do a lot of these playlists).  Ok one can easily critique, where's Janis Joplin, Carole King, Tina Turner, Sheryl Crow, Joan Baez, Aretha Franklin, Judy Collins, Loretta Lynn, Gillian Welch, or Lucinda Williams and you can check out Beth's 15 song playlist here for others.  ..read more

DBT #279 Corb Lund - El Viejo
Dave's Basement Tracks

Back in 2022 I started following this Canadien country singer when he put out his "Songs My Friends Wrote" and I really haven't spent enough time with that album when I saw he was releasing a new one on Feb 23, 2024.  It looked interesting and I clicked it to my wishlist.  At March Bandcamp Friday I picked up and it has been my most played album since. (Molly Tuttle's Grammy Winner "City of Gold" has been second)  Yes, if US's country music sounded like this I'd be planning to attend a bunch of Country Fests, but sadly it doesn't and we'll hope that Cord gets to the Big Top s ..read more

DBT #278 Texas Attitude
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper
3w ago
Well yesterday was Bandcamp Friday, and I added over four hours of music to the library.  Of course very eclectic like my tastes, and a seemingly a few more male voices because my teases me all I buy is music from women.  As I working outside in 50 degree weather in Wisconsin on the first of March (insane) I noted the music had a lot of Texas themes; so here a playlist from the idea. First these were my purchases, and listen to them on my Bandcamp collection page. So here's the song playlist! 1) Welcome to Texas - Susan Werner Well so much for not adding too many more women but ..read more

DBT #277 Also Going Nowhere - Luke Callen
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper
1M ago
Luke Callen has graced this blog over 15 times, so you could figure that I would review his new album; especially since I've been itching to do this since December when I bought the pre-released vinyl in a show at the Root Note.  Now while the LaCrosse area is a small market, it has some great entertainment within a 30 mile radius; and to see the Root Note booking again brings me such joy.  While I didn't get a video from the night because I was deeper in the packed crowd, I did get a picture of Siri joining in on harmonies. Of course if you follow me, you know all the LaCro ..read more

DBT #276 Rocky Mountain Folks Fest
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper

Wow, surprisingly I never shared a post about Lori and I going to our first ever Rocky Mountain Folks Fest in Lyons CO.  We really enjoyed ourselves, so much we just bought tickets for a return visit and this time we're staying 3 minutes from downtown rather than 24 minutes away in Longmount.  We booked last year to see Shanna in a Dress who won the Songwriter contest the year before.  Then they booked our WI musician friends of Humbird and Dead Horses too.  Gracious.  I put most of our adventures into videos and must have shared them only on the Facebook and YouTube ..read more

DBT #275 Taylor Swift Song Study
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper
1M ago
2023 was the year that I decided that if I was going to be serious about music I should own and understand today's pop icon.  Taylor Swift was an enigma to me, but there had to be substance to be able to inspire all those fans.  Of course I am not shy to appreciate good songwriting and recently I've helped out with the Great River Folk Fest Songwriter Contest.  During that contest I had the opportunity to meet and to befriend to winners Shanna in a Dress and Siena Christie.  Both are truly wonderful writers, and have had more acclamations from Kerrville Folk Fest and Rock ..read more

DBT #274 Shake
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper
1M ago
I know, I know; after Bandcamp Friday and adding six hours of music to the library I should be focusing on that BUT I have three fun playlists stashed to talk about.  SHAKE came to mind because this week while sorting, filing, and importing CDs (yes they were a mess and I found some not in my Discogs yet); I ran into this note inside Samantha Farrell's "Luminous." Yes we became friends on MySpace years ago this cd was released in 2009, and is only now available on Bandcamp digitally.  Sam wrote the best Shake song that was an inspiration for this playlist. With a playlist of ..read more

Dave's Basement Tracks

If you don't know about Bandcamp Friday, you must be new to the blog.  It is where I spend most of my money and add to the digital library.  I'll come back to this post and add to it some songs that highlight the day.  If you want to listen to any or all of the six hours of music, stop over to my Bandcamp page and stream whatever you would like.  BC gives you usually three full listens until they ask you to pay for the song. Here's my PAGE. Next blog steps: - Stop over to the Review page to my other most spinned and loved albums. - Browse the rest o ..read more

DBT #273 So Strong - Jaspar Lepak
Dave's Basement Tracks
by Dave Schipper
2M ago
Jaspar Lepak just released her 6th album, and describes it on Bandcamp as: Folk-charting songwriter Jaspar Lepak returns with her new feminist-themed album So Strong. The follow-up to her breakout album Desert Ghosts (which charted in the Top 10 on folk radio), this highly anticipated release perfectly weaves the personal with the political – inspired by the overturning of Roe, the loss of her childhood friend to cancer and her own experiences with pregnancy, childbirth and caregiving. Bravely honest, the songs are deep, sweet and even playful at times. From the funny, science-based “P ..read more
