Not even a year since we had the last one, and in Iceland, Mother Nature is serving another melting pot of lava! It’s in the same area as the 2021 eruption. We call this one the Merardalir eruption and it’s believed to be at least twice as big as the Fagradalsfjall eruption of 2021. To fully enjoy the spectacle one can hike to a great vantage point and see the eruption. Pay attention to the wind, if you have it into your face from the eruption, it’s really bad. You will get the smoke from the volcano and it can be anywhere from very unpleasant to dangerous. Follow signs carefully and if in do ..read more

It’s been a week now of erupting in Geldingadalir (do we really have to come up with names like this when it erupts, remember Eyjafjallajökull?). At first it was thought to be a small eruption that would wear off pretty quickly. That seems not to be the case now. It may go on for months, even years! Apparently it is taking the form of a shield volcano and the magma is transferred to the surface all the way from the Earth’s mantle, which means there is no apparent magma chamber underneath the volcano. One scientist described it as a high-speed connection to the Earth’s core! What volcanologists ..read more
