Improving Strength with the Alexander Technique

Strength training can leave you feeling sore, tight, heavy-legged or lighter, springier and livelier depending on your approach.  Here’s my thinking on the subject. Strength does not always work in our favour I recall being at a conference some years ago.  Sat in front of me was a young man who looked as if he spent a lot of time working out.  He certainly had muscular arms and shoulders, but what intrigued me was that he seemed unable to support his own body weight – he leant on his elbows most of the time and frequently changed position.  Coffee time came along, and I co ..read more

An Audio Gift – Exploring Whole Body Awareness

It’s Christmas, so I would like to offer you a gift – a short audio clip that I recorded that you can return to as often as you like. The ability to ‘Come to quiet’ is an essential aspect of the Alexander Technique, and each week in the group that I have been running, we explored ways of achieving this. Everyone liked the one I call ‘My Left Knows Where My Right Is’, so I decided to record for you. It is best listened to sitting down or lying in semi-supine with a few books supporting your head. The purpose of it is to: • Help you become aware of the whole of your body • Create a sense of bala ..read more

Three Things I Have Loved About 2020

It’s been a funny old year that has left me finding little to say in blogs and Facebook posts.  But, as the year comes to an end, I realise there are a few things I have loved about it.  Sharing them seems like an excellent way to wrap up the year:   Loyal Clients Before this year, I could not have imagined teaching Alexander Technique online. Given a choice between not teaching at all and teaching online, I decided online was worth a try.  Some of my clients have adapted quickly, and others have decided it is not for them, which is fine.  I am grateful for those who ..read more

If you are interested in the Alexander Technique and enjoy learning groups, my weekly class starting on Tuesday 21st September 2021 at Prince Henry’s Grammar School in Otley may be just the thing for you. Group classes work better for some people than more traditional one to one lessons. Here are just a few reasons why: The opportunity to learn from others Discussing ideas in a group can help us understand concepts that on our own we might find difficult. Also, working in pairs or small groups gives us the chance to notice how others move, which can help us recognise how common some habits are ..read more

To honour the advice about social distancing, I am no longer teaching in person. However, I am currently doing some training to teach online with an Alexander Technique teacher called Mio Morales. He developed a version of the technique that he calls ‘Primal Alexander’ and has been successfully teaching it online for many years. The focus of this work is on our thinking, in particular: The all-important pause that allows us to make new choices Building awareness of how we react and move, so we know if we are doing what we intend to do at the time we are doing it (not afterwards as is ..read more

This is my first blog since the start of lockdown back in March.  I have meant to write for months, but the time just hasn’t felt right.  I guess I have been hoping for a significant change with Coronavirus, but it is clear that is yet to come.  So, here are my current thoughts, some options for the future and an invitation to experience the benefits of the Alexander Technique online. Teaching the Alexander Technique during the Coronavirus pandemic Whilst some therapists are starting to see clients in person again, I have decided that I am not yet comfortable with doing that. Photo: B. Fertman   Bruce Fertman is a colleague whose work I love. He writes beautifully, capturing the subtleties of the Alexander Technique in a way that most teachers, including me, rarely do. He recently published an article on ‘The top ten myths about the Alexander Technique’ which, just as expected, is an excellent read. I am sharing Bruce’s thoughts here because they are so valuable, I have also added my thoughts about his thoughts! To comment on all ten at once would make a very long read so this is one of a series of blogs dedicated to ‘The Top Ten Myths about the Alexander Tec ..read more
