Pam’s Story of Living with AML (July)

Written by Pam Wilson When I set about to tell my cancer story, I just had a hard time summing it all up so I just assumed I was never going to be able to write well enough to be called a writer. For some reason that has always been important to me. I want to convey to others how I feel. While in stall mode, I picked up my journal. To this day, I cannot actually remember how I wrote it. I am going to give you a couple of these entries. I figure most people like to hear the raw truth, no editing, no one judging you. I want you to know the truth of living with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). I do ..read more

New, Effective Therapy for Pediatric Leukemia
Leukemia Research Foundation

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer in children under 14. T-ALL, a subtype of ALL, has a significantly poorer prognosis than other subtypes, especially after a relapse. A group of researchers have discovered a new, more effective therapy for T-ALL that includes a combination of drugs. Therapies for children with T-ALL generally include a single drug. However, the efficacy of a single drug diminishes quickly and does not work well against relapsed disease. The researchers set out to find drug combinations that enhance one another and have a synergistic effect. They dis ..read more

Living Each Day to the Fullest After a Difficult Prognosis

In early 2018, Joe visited his doctor for an annual physical. He underwent all the routine tests – blood pressure check, physical exam, and a blood draw. At the time, he was feeling great, eating right, and exercising regularly, so he expected a clean bill of health. A few days later, Joe’s doctor called. His blood tests were abnormal. After additional testing, his doctor confirmed Joe had mantle cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. “Before my diagnosis, I lived a very full and productive life. I did things ‘the right way’ and looked forward to living a long time ..read more

Running in the ABC 7 Gibbons 5K Run and 3K Walk is important to Team Dengler.  We asked the team captain, Dana to tell us why they are joining this year. “Our family has done the Gibbons 5k in previous years and appreciate all of your efforts to organize an amazing event for cause so special to us. We are running this year to honor two very special men in our lives. Our grandfather Gene Dengler Sr. lost his battle to AML in 2011 , and our best friend and father Gene Dengler Jr. was diagnosed with CLL in 2020 and is heroically fighting against the disease today. My sister and I along with ..read more

Nancy of Team Bad Blood has been a longtime supporter of ABC 7 Gibbons 5K Run and 3K Walk and has had many individual fundraisers that she has done throughout the year, too.  When asked why she named her team Bad Blood, she quips, “well because leukemia is just that, bad blood”. We are so grateful to her and her supporters for all their devotion to our cause.  They make our mission possible. This year we asked for a few remarks on her yearly participation.  “Holy Cannoli! I can’t believe I’m here for the FIFTEENTH year telling my story about how and why I came to be involved wi ..read more

Thank you to all of our company teams that support us each year by walking and running at the ABC7 Gibbons 5K Run and 3K Walk. One team that has joined us for many years is Focus, a Chicago-based developer and general contractor. We reached out to ask them to share why they participate, and here’s what they said.  “Focus is dedicated to building community for our clients and team members alike, and as part of that commitment, look for ways to have some fun while doing some good. The ABC 7 Gibbons Run/Walk is also an excellent way for our team to encourage health and wellness by getting o ..read more

Carol’s Team of Hope joins us again this year at our run/walk. Carol has been a strong fundraiser and supporter of our cause for many years and we are so grateful for her support and participation. “I have been an oncology nurse for 30+ years and have been proud to be part of the Leukemia Research Foundation for many of those years. I started walking with family, patients, and friends in the late 1990s and began running the 5k in 2007. Shortly after that I formed my team and started fundraising. My husband, Jim, was my biggest supporter, always there to walk and cheer us on. As an oncolo ..read more
