Benjamin Britten (1913–1976) is one of the great British composers. Concertgoers are probably most familiar with Britten’s War Requiem, which has been one of the most important works for chorus and orchestra since its premiere in 1962.
But Benjamin Britten was also productive in the field of opera: his best-known stage works are probably Peter Grimes and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In addition, however, he created many other pieces for the opera stage.
In this list you will find all operas by Benjamin Britten with the year of the premiere.

Engelbert Humperdinck became famous almost “overnight” in 1893 with his opera Hansel and Gretel. The premiere of the fairy-tale opera, which is still widely performed today, was conducted by the 29-year-old Richard Strauss. Within a very short time, Hansel and Gretel was staged at all the world’s major opera houses.
Humperdinck’s later operas lagged behind this great success. Humperdinck, a great admirer of Wagner, wrote many more stage works, especially – as with Hansel and Gretel – fairy-tale operas.
In this list you will find all of Engelbert Humperdinck’s operas, includ ..read more

He is still one of the most important opera composers today, although he only lived to the age of 33: Vincenzo Bellini. His most famous operas are probably Norma and I Puritani.
But by no means all Bellini operas were successful. Some were even an outright “flop”, for example the opera Beatrice di Tenda, which was written between the successful operas Norma and I Puritani, but failed at its premiere in 1833 at the Teatro la Fenice.
In this list you will find all the operas by Vincenzo Bellini, including the year and place of the premiere.

For many opera-goers, Richard Wagner’s operas are among the highlights of the repertoire. Wagner created a total of 15 stage works in his lifetime. But only the last ten (from the Flying Dutchman to Parsifal) may be performed at the famous Bayreuth Festival – Wagner himself stipulated that.
Wagner was known as a slow worker. That is why it is interesting to take a look at the following table of all Wagner operas and the periods in which they were written: Wagner worked on the “Götterdämmerung” (with numerous interruptions) for 26 years!
In addition, you will find the respec ..read more

Giuseppe Verdi is still one of the most performed and most popular opera composers today. What is striking is that throughout his life, Verdi repeatedly managed to create genuine “hits” – for in addition to late operas such as Otello and Falstaff, early works such as Nabucco and Macbeth also enjoy great popularity.
Verdi often revised his operas several times, which can be confusing. Therefore, in this list you will find all operas by Giuseppe Verdi with the year of the premiere. If there were adaptations of a work, you will also find the year of the premiere of the adapted ..read more
