Rumours have been swirling all day about what caused the Bastille last night to drop its curtain early on Simon Boccanegra. The Australian soprano Nicole Car has just posted the reason for it: During last night’s performance of Simone Boccanegra, I began to feel quite unwell and the decision was made to bring down the curtain early and take me to the hospital. Unfortunately this meant our audience missed the end of this very moving and special piece. I am aware I have made a lot of you worried, so I wanted to give you all an update. After a night in hospital and many reassuring tests, I have b ..read more

On Saturday night, passions run deep in our stream from Düsseldorf: Eugene Onegin (courtesy of OperaVision). Tchaikovsky adapted Pushkin’s verse novel Eugene Onegin in the late 1870s. Its story of unrequited love mirrored events in the composer’s own life. In May 1877, Tchaikovsky had received a letter from an unknown ex-Moscow Conservatory student, Antonina Milyukova, claiming she had been secretly in love with him for years. Tchaikovsky appears to have no real feelings for Antonina but had heartfelt sympathy for the unrequited lover, and, through Tatyana, searched for a musical ..read more

Wednesday night’s performance went ahead in half a staging after one set got caught in an elevator. Peter Gelb told the audience that the jam happened as sets were being moved after a daytime rehearsal of Puccini’s La Rondine. ‘Our brilliant cast, orchestra and chorus are ready to perform for you in what will be an historic first — a semi-staged presentation of `Turandot’ at the Met,’ he said, offering refunds to the disgruntled. Alexander Neef, head of the Paris Opera, said yesterday that he had inherited Ring plans from his predecessor but he was happy to ‘give a touch of Spanish colour’ to the 150th anniversary of Wagner’s monumental first production. Bieito (pictured), like Wagner, loves nothing better than provoking the bourgeoisie. His Triatan in Vienna was described as ‘ terrible and dilettante ‘. His conductor in Paris will be the reassuring Pablo Heras-Casado. What could possibly go wrong? Also in the 2024-25 season are Offenbach’s Les Brigands, staged by Barrie Kosky and a Peter Sellars- Teodor Currentzis v ..read more
