Question about ballet class etiquette

Hello! I haven't posted in a long time so I thought I would give a little update. I have changed schools since posting last, and I have a few questions regarding class etiquette since this school seems to do things very differently from what I am used to. They say that they run the school like a professional company even though we are aged 12 to 17.  At every other place I have taken class or danced in there has been a much stricter set of rules, for example: The more advanced dancers are in the front of the class when starting combinations, barre, and going across the floor, and people l ..read more

Can I actually do Ballet at 16?

I have been wanting to do ballet ever since I could remember, and I have been really contemplating whether I should or not. I've always had a passion for ballet, and I understand and have a lot of knowledge about it, (I understand that it is not just about the aesthetic, and a lot goes behind the scenes of a wonderful performance on stage and it involves a lot of strength, physically and mentally). A little background information, I have been doing ballet when I was 6-7 years old, but I stopped after about two years or so as I had some issues with my teacher. I couldn't really stay consistent ..read more

Video Audition Dilemma

I am 13, turning 14 in January. I was planning to make a video audition for several schools, one of which being San Francisco Ballet. The website states that girls 14 and up must do the entire audition on pointe. I don't know whether to film the video in technique shoes (except for the last few minutes) or in pointe shoes. There is no way of telling whether I would be 14 by the audition in person, as there is not one anywhere near my city that I can go to.   Does anyone have any suggestions?   Thank you ..read more

Skills/Technique to Have by Age 13/14

Hello.  I am fairly new to ballet and it's been difficult to judge where exactly I fall in terms of technical ability.  I know much of ballet is very individualized, but could anyone give me a list of skills or technique that an old 13/young 14-year-old should have?  Assuming this student wants to pursue a career in ballet. Edit: I know late starters have a hard time making it professionally.  I still want to try my hardest ..read more

Stay at current small studio or move?

Hi! I need some advice as I'm beginning to decide whether I should stay at my current small studio, or go to another bigger school in the area (for next dance year) My current studio has fabulous teachers, who have helped me immensely and have offered to coach me even more. Sadly, there are not nearly enough classes for my age (14) and only about 2-4 dancers in the past 15 years have gone pro.  The other school I'm considering is a bigger school with an incredible track record of students who have gone on to professional careers. A friend is a student there, and highly recommends it. I wo ..read more

Looking for Online Private/Group Ballet Coaching

I'm currently looking for online (private/group) ballet coaching for additional training. I already knew about a few well-known platforms and teachers that offered online coaching. They are really good teachers, but the prices are really expensive and I can't really afford it for the long term. If anyone knows any platforms, teachers, or professionals that offer online coaching, please let me know. It would be better if it was at a reasonable price. I would really appreciate your help ..read more

YAGP locations and drama

Hi!   I have heard from several people that certain YAGP locations are better than others and that's why you see schools and individuals traveling to different states to compete when they have locations already near them. Based on this I was wondering which locations are the best to attend?   I have also had several teachers/coaches mention that they feel there is a lot of favoritism or money being given by families for a better outcome etc things like this? I even had one coach say oh its not about how good you are or about your technique for yagp placement.  I was so surprised ..read more
