Vaughn Grissom has yet to play a game in a Red Sox uniform. Acquired this past winter in exchange for left-hander Chris Sale, the 23-year-old second baseman missed all of spring training due to groin and hamstring injuries and for the past two weeks has been on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester trying to get ready for the season. Now it appears his debut could be imminent. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Grissom is scheduled to play nine innings with the WooSox in Toledo on Saturday and Sunday, and if all goes well he could join the big league club soon after. “This is the last hurdle ..read more

Red Sox 1B Triston Casas on rib injury: ‘I pretty much created a car crash within my body’
Boston Herald » Red Sox
by Mac Cerullo

Triston Casas first felt the discomfort after a swing against Ben Lively during last Wednesday’s shutout of the Cleveland Guardians at Fenway Park. The Red Sox first baseman thought it was an abdominal issue, but after trying to tough it out for a few days it eventually became clear this wasn’t an injury he could play through. Now Casas is likely to miss several months with what the club described as a rib fracture, though after a series of examinations he likened to an anatomy lesson, Casas explained his injury is actually a bit more complex than a simple bone break. “No ribs were fractured ..read more

Red Sox vs Cubs: Lineups, pitching matchups, game times, and how to watch
Boston Herald » Red Sox
by Gabrielle Starr

After going 4-2 on their road trip to Pittsburgh and Cleveland, the Red Sox are home and looking to give Fenway the caliber of play the old ballpark deserves. The Sox went 3-7 in their first homestand, and 39-42 at home last season. They’re 4-4 in series openers this year. They’ll host the Chicago Cubs for three games over the weekend, then enjoy a day off on Monday before the San Francisco Giants arrive for three games. Though they’re two of Major League Baseball’s oldest franchises, the Red Sox and Cubs have only faced each other 21 times in the regular season; Chicago has a slim 11-10 advan ..read more

HARTFORD, Conn. — For as long as they’ve been with the organization, Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel have been viewed as cornerstones of the Red Sox future. All three were top draft picks and are usually lumped together by fans and evaluators, but it wasn’t until this past winter that the trio actually connected as a group for the first time. They’ve been nearly inseparable since. From the Red Sox rookie development program to Winter Weekend to spring training and now the top of the Portland Sea Dogs order, Boston’s “big three” prospects have begun forging a strong connection on and ..read more

Red Sox can’t overcome José Ramírez’s grand slam, drop series in Cleveland
Boston Herald » Red Sox

The Red Sox went 4-2 on their second road trip of the year, sweeping the Pirates in Pittsburgh and avoiding getting swept by the Guardians in Cleveland. After their first homestand culminated in a blemished 3-7 mark to begin the Fenway season, it was a much-needed palate cleanser. But the trip ended on a period rather than an exclamation point; the Sox lost Thursday’s series finale 6-4, taking some of the wind out of their sails before their return to Boston. Making his first start of the year in place of the injured Brayan Bello, Chase Anderson escaped a jam in the first inning, but couldn’t ..read more

Abreu, Devers, Wong combine for 11 hits, Sox shut out Guardians
Boston Herald » Red Sox

It speaks to their depth and resilience that the Red Sox can still look like a complete team without so many key players. Hours after the club placed Brayan Bello on the 15-day injured list with right lat tightness, they put together an impressive 8-0 victory. Against the Cleveland Guardians, who came into the contest with a Major League-best 17-6 record, no less. After being outscored 24-15 by Cleveland in their first five meetings of the season, the Boston bats collected a season-high 16 hits, including four-hit performances by Wilyer Abreu and Connor Wong – who homered twice – and three kno ..read more

Red Sox lineups: Rafael Devers returns, Masataka Yoshida sits again
Boston Herald » Red Sox
by Mac Cerullo

Rafael Devers is back in the Red Sox lineup for the first time since last Wednesday. The Red Sox slugger is batting second and starting at designated hitter after missing the last five games due to knee discomfort. With Devers serving as DH, Masataka Yoshida once again finds himself the odd man out after sitting Tuesday in favor of the returning Tyler O’Neill. This will be his third straight game out of the lineup overall, and though Yoshida’s playing time has taken a noticeable dip dating back to last week, Red Sox manager Alex Cora has told reporters he is not injured. Instead it appear ..read more

Red Sox place Brayan Bello on 15-day injured list with right lat tightness
Boston Herald » Red Sox
by Mac Cerullo

The bad news just keeps coming for the Red Sox. Prior to Wednesday’s game, the club announced right-hander Brayan Bello is being placed on the 15-day injured list with right lat tightness. To fill his spot on the roster, the club is recalling right-hander Zack Kelly from Triple-A. The club’s Opening Day starter, Bello is among several Red Sox standouts who the team really can’t afford to be without. The 24-year-old recently signed a six-year contract extension that will keep him in Boston through the remainder of the decade, and through his first five starts Bello had posted a 3.04 ERA over 26 ..read more

Red Sox offense wastes Tanner Houck’s latest gem in 4-1 loss to Guardians
Boston Herald » Red Sox
by Mac Cerullo

The Cleveland Guardians had all week to prepare for Tanner Houck. After getting shredded by the 27-year-old right-hander in last week’s complete game shutout, the Guardians presumably studied the data, made their adjustments and came into Tuesday with a new plan of attack. For most of the night, it didn’t work. Houck was excellent once again, shutting the Guardians down over six-plus innings, but he eventually ran out of gas and got little support from the depleted Red Sox offense in the club’s eventual 4-1 loss. Cleveland’s decisive breakthrough came in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 1-0 ..read more

Triston Casas diagnosed with rib fracture, will be out ‘a while’
Boston Herald » Red Sox
by Mac Cerullo
3d ago
Red Sox manager Alex Cora provided a discouraging update on Triston Casas’ injury, telling reporters in Cleveland that the first baseman has a fractured rib and will miss an extended period of time. “He has a fracture so he’ll be out for a while,” Cora said, as transcribed by MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “Obviously we had a pretty good idea a few days ago but after all the tests in Boston, that’s what came out. We just have to be patient now. Timetable? There’s none. This has to heal on its own. We’ve just got to be patient.” Casas was placed on the injured list with what was originally described as ..read more
