Tropical Doctor, Ahead of Print. Our case-control study aimed at identifying the risk factors (RFs) for ectopic pregnancy (EP), and was carried out between 1st February and 31st May, 2019. Tropical Doctor, Ahead of Print. Burkholderia, a multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, is an uncommon cause of infection mostly in immunocompromised patients with a clinical profile very similar to tuberculosis. The most common conditions associated with this organism are cystic fibrosis and chronic granulomatous diseases. Bacteremia with it occurs in patients who are chronically ill and associated with significant morbidity and mortality. We are reporting here a case of perisplenic intra-abdominal abscess caused by Burkholderia cepacia in a patient with sickle cell disease (SCD ..read more

Tropical Doctor, Ahead of Print. Though common, the extraction of rectal foreign bodies is still a great challenge for surgeons. The foreign body's position can usually be verified by plain abdominal radiography. Given the potential of sexually transmitted disease, screening for HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis is warranted prior to intervention. The utilization and selection of surgical instruments need to be flexible, ingenious, and innovative ..read more

Tropical Doctor, Ahead of Print. Melioidosis and leptospirosis are two emerging tropical infections that share somewhat similar clinical manifestations but require different methods of management. A 59-year-old farmer presented to a tertiary care hospital with an acute febrile illness associated with arthralgia, myalgia and jaundice, complicated by oliguric acute kidney injury and pulmonary haemorrhage. Treatment was initiated for complicated leptospirosis but with poor response. Blood culture was positive for Burkholderia pseudomallei and microscopic agglutination test (MAT) for leptospirosis ..read more

Tropical Doctor, Ahead of Print. Kanpur, India, recently witnessed an outbreak of undifferentiated febrile illness among medical students. Several students developed high-grade fever with altered sensorium within 2–3 days after the index case. Surprisingly, this outbreak coincided with the death of several pigs in the vicinity. Acute necrotising encephalitis, although rare, was noted in some patients. When correlated with each other, all of these incidents were suggestive of an outbreak of H1N1 ..read more
