This is an annual report for Revolutionary Games Studio ry for the main / most important things that happened during the year.
Main Projects
Revolutionary Games Studio ry supported the development of the following open source projects in 2023:
Thrive
In 2023 there were 5 releases of Thrive, which is slightly less than the usual. The first of these releases was 0.6.1 and the last one was 0.6.4.1. The reason for fewer releases was the ECS rework that took the time of 2 releases. We had 32 open source contributors contributing to these releases, which is two less than in 2022. The association had ..read more

It is finally here, Thrive now uses Godot 4.
I’ve just merged the code to master branch switching the Godot version. However as this is a huge change, I could not make it all at once. So while Thrive now basically works, there’s still a lot of issues and warnings from Godot to solve.
This means that anyone working on Thrive locally should now go and download Godot 4.2 (it seems that maybe 4.2.2 RC1 is required to successfully import Thrive). Also if you have opened Thrive in Godot 3, you need to delete the existing .import folder as it seems like that prevents Godot 4 from doing the asset impo ..read more

I mentioned this in the discord yesterday, but I believe that we can make things easier for everyone by listing all members of the Theory team by our various fields of expertise as well as other fields we have some knowledge in. This could help streamline who is pinged in discord to answer questions other team members have.
I’ll also do my best to keep all of the information near the top of this discussion for ease of access.

Hello everyone, I am Yusuf. I am a Biology undergraduate student at the University in Turkey. At the same time, I am working with a friend on the antimicrobial activities of fungi and the evolutionary process of the resistance of some bacteria and microorganisms to fungal toxins. I will be very happy to contribute to the Thrive project both theoretically and in translation.

Hello.
I am Polish hobbyist programmer, I’m not really that good at programming, but I’ll try to help in my capacity.
What really captivated me is how it showed me how beautiful life is, as a phenomenon that occured on our planet, under certain conditions and managed to survive the trials of time and always find a way out, the ability to adapt and morph into endless forms of beings. Really cool.

The .po translation files have references to where in the source code the text key is used. These cause a ton of merge conflicts and I’m fed up with them after recently doing 2 manual rebases where on each PR I had to fix the en.po file like 6 times.
This should be a pretty easy change with just adding a --no-location to the extraction script. Hopefully Weblate keeps working if the reference lines are in the main .pot file, but if not I don’t think many people actually used the reference feature (as it isn’t very useful if you aren’t a programmer). So this shouldn’t be a huge loss anyway, and ..read more

Just based on my own experiences doing some outreach, lurking the community Discord once in a while, and reading some other intro threads; I think the typical person interested in joining the team is not going to be too familiar with a lot of the grunt work involved in a project like this. They’re likely to be something like a high school or college undergrad student that has an interest in game dev as a potential hobby/career and also thinks they happen to be able to do something that would be useful to the project like making visual art or music/sound, ensuring scientific accuracy as much as ..read more
