I enjoy the magic of electronics. Electronics are mysterious… yeah. Anonymous 3rd year student Electrical Engineering is not just about circuits and wires; it’s about the digital transformation that’s shaping our world. Chat GPT Greetings future engineers. By now, you should all have some experience and insight into each of the specialisations, with *some* idea of the fields you are interested in. I don’t exactly have much else to say about the current courses I am taking. Like to be fair, it’s pretty self explanatory and easy to google the curriculum – or read through some of the other blog ..read more

What a year it has been. Eight courses and a handful of exams later, I am now only one result away from being able to tick this year off. As I cast my eyes across the last two semesters that are all but behind me, with a mixture of relief and contentment (thankfully without contempt) I can say that I am pleased with my specialisation choice. While I am sure that I would have been able to enjoy most any specialisation, EEE has provided the mix of challenge and satisfaction that I had hoped for. The lecture content has been perpetually interesting (or, at least, it has never been uninteresting ..read more

Preface Internships. Where do I even begin? I am by no means proficient in regards to any part of the delightful process that is hunting for the aforementioned practical hours that ENGGEN 499 requires. Bearing that in mind, I have a collection of seemingly useful tips, suggestions, and recommendations that I have picked up along the way; I do hope that they may bear fruit for you. Six pieces of dubious advice The early student gets the internship, or something to that effect. This list is vaguely in a descending order of importance but starting early is definitely the superlative piece of adv ..read more

Goodness gracious it’s just about the end of year two! As much as I may not like the way that it sounds when said out loud, this marks the halfway point of my degree. Having reached midway one might expect feelings of confidence, competence or even congruence in regard to one’s specialisation … I had hoped so too. While the Bachelor of Engineering degree may be fifty percent complete, I am only just getting started with my specialisation (well, technically I have already done a third of that, but we are trying to forget about those big, scary numbers for the meantime). This is, I feel, an impo ..read more

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this image? Where on earth did that month and a half go? It feels like it was only a couple of weeks ago that I was writing my last blog. Anyways, I thought that I might as well share a few blithe little thoughts on each paper for your reading (dis)pleasure. With those preliminaries out of the way – let us begin. ELECTENG 204: Engineering Electromagnetics The best way that I can describe this course is thoroughly inoffensive. You learn some important electromagnetic concepts (transmission lines, magnetic systems, transformers and more) that pave the way ..read more

I thought that I might share with you all some thematic consistencies that I have noticed across my courses this year. While these motifs may be broad in their scope, and as such can be applied to any engineering specialization, I will try and put an EEE twist to them all. Simulations and their pitfalls Simulations can, and will, lie to you. They are only as good as the data and set up that is provided to them, which is provided by oneself, who is often wrong and is subject to the most painful of foibles: human error and hubris. The pity is that it can be so easy to forget this, as one ends up ..read more
