Let’s Travel Back in Time
The Devotional Guy

Let’s travel back in time to Memorial Day Weekend 2020. It’s about two and a half months after the Lockdowns began in America. It’s the first major holiday weekend since the spread of the pandemic. There was talk of reopening and getting back to normal. Angst and frustration filled the air. Store shelves were empty. Supply chains were disrupted. Life as we once knew it had changed dramatically if not altered permanently. An estimated 100,000 Americans are said to have died as a result of this virus in less than 90 days—equaling the combined total deaths our nation suffered in the Korean and Vi ..read more

My Low-down Skinny on Thinner Reads
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™

Terri will tell you that I love to read. I find that I am reading thin books these days. My attention span seems to be growing shorter due to numerous interruptions and demands on my time. “Squirrel!” My day-to-day routines and rituals hinge on keeping numerous competing tasks and responsibilities in play, similar to juggling flaming chainsaws. I find myself preferring smaller, more intense doses in many areas of my life. I want to slow down and take time focusing on what matters most and the people who mean the most. Do you find that is true for you? A couple of my current reads. My Low-Down S ..read more

When We Speak About God, Words Matter
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™

When we speak about God and talk about the things of God, the words we choose matter. We may mean well —our intentions may be good—but when we speak about God inaccurately we delve into dark and dangerous territory. God is not someone to be mocked. Truth is not something to be toyed with but rather something to be celebrated and used to edify others in their spiritual journey. We must celebrate God’s truth just as we must honor God’s word and show reverence to His work. We love each other because he loved us first. 1 John 4:19 NLT Yes, words matter. For instance, love. God is the very ..read more

My Sunday Evening Post
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™

Welcome back to my blog, my friend. It’s been quite the week here since my previous post last Sunday. Monday, I brought my Mom to Dallas on a day trip to see an eye doctor. We have been unsatisfied with her eye doctors at home and are hoping to help her get answers about her struggling eyesight. Thursday, my sister- in-law had a heart procedure to address issues she has been experiencing in recent weeks. My brother-in-law recently underwent w heal surgery. So life has been difficult for them, to say the least. While at the hospital visiting my sister-in-law, my father-in-law tripped and fell ..read more

A Prayer for a Time of Spiritual Dryness
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™
2w ago
The other day in my post titled, “How Poetry Reawakens Our Prayer Life” I touched on the topic of experiencing spiritual dryness. As a result, here’s a prayer I want to share with those of you who may be wandering in the desert looking for God. I pray that it touches your heart and stirs your soul. On Prayer Prayer is a personal conversation with God. Prayer offers us a time to share our fears, hopes, and needs with our Creator. No one cares more for or about you than God. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request ..read more

Discovering Your Significance in Your Irrelevance
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, touches on the essence of what might be considered ‘irrelevant’ in ministry, yet profoundly significant in God’s eyes. In his letter to the Corinthian church, Paul wrote: But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (NIV) Paul sheds light on the significance of what the world migh ..read more

How do the Bible’s Prophetic Events Impact Our Lives Today?
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™

Believe it or not, prophetic events described in the Bible surrounding the End Times hold deep significance for our lives today. Biblical prophecies offer both warning and hope, urge us to be ready, and foster a deeper relationship with God. Admittedly, talk about the End Times can be scary. Yet, not talking about it doesn’t keep it from being a reality. If God said it, you can count on it happening because we worship and serve a God who keeps His promises and fulfills His prophecies. To be clear, the Bible neither provides specific details about the role of individual nations nor lines out an ..read more

Hearing Our Name Spoken Is Powerful!
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™

I’ve heard it said the sweetest sound to our ears is our name. When someone says our name they affirm our individuality and presence. Hearing our name spoken is powerful! People experiencing life on the streets can go weeks, even months, without hearing someone speak their name. On the other hand, I am growing increasingly aware that hearing my name has become a trigger for me. The other day I was walking down a hallway upstairs at work when I heard someone call my name. It was late in the day and there weren’t really many of my coworkers left in our 26,000 square foot building. Most of our gu ..read more

How Poetry Reawakens Our Prayer Life
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™

This past year or so, as Terri and I have been searching for a new church home and trying to balance work and our spiritual lives, I’ve read more poetry than I have in a long while. Over the years, I’ve found I like to swim in deeper waters than many churches like to wade in. Honestly, the last few months I’ve been struggling with my prayer life. As I’ve explored ways to reignite and refresh my prayer life, I stumbled across some interesting and deeply spiritual poems. I just want to go deeper. I’ve discovered that poetry and prayer are deeply connected. Both are forms of expression emerging f ..read more

The Church is not a Building
The Devotional Guy
by The Devotional Guy™
3w ago
In our fast-paced, uber-busy world, it’s far too easy to think that the church is confined to a building. Scripture makes it clear that church is not defined as a physical structure Christians attend every week. Yet, I’ve heard the fallacy that true church happens only in the confines of a building proclaimed from more than one pulpit in recent months. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20 (NIV) This view catapulted to the forefront after the lockdowns that occurred as a result of the COVID-19 virus. The pandemic caused churches everywhere to flip the s ..read more
