A visit to the Elizabeth Fort is up there with my favourite things to do in Cork.
If you’re a fan of Irish history and you’d like to step back in time for an hour or so, a visit to the mighty Elisabeth Fort is well worth doing.
Named for Queen Elizabeth I and built in 1601, the fort offers the visitor the chance to find out more about Cork’s turbulent past and makes a great day out for all the family.
In the guide below, you’ll find info on everything from the history of Elisabeth Fort to what there is to do inside.

The Doolough Valley in Mayo is one of those places that rocks you a bit.
The Doolough (‘Black Lake’ in English) Valley is a scenic corner of Mayo where unspoiled scenery collides with raw, isolated beauty.
Arguably best-know for the terrible event known as ‘The Doolough Tragedy’, this place delivers an experience that lingers with you long after you leave.

In my opinion, the best pubs in Galway City are The Crane and Tig Chóilí.
With that said, I have 5 ‘go-tos’ (all old-school, traditional pubs) if I’m in the city and have time for a pint or 6.
Each of these pubs dishes up a decent pint of Guinness, hold live music sessions and, based on my many visits, never fails to disappoint. Cheers!

You’ll find the historic Vico Baths in Dalkey, along the affluent Vico Road.
Although it earned global fame in recent years thanks to visits from the likes of Harry Styles and Matt Damon, this is far from a new addition to Dublin.
The Victorians built the Vico Road in the late 1800s and the Vico Bathing Place has been one of the most popular places to go swimming in Dublin ever since.
Below, you’ll discover the history of the baths, a map showing how to get to them along with info on parking (a headache).

The Skellig Ring is an often-overlooked scenic drive/cycle that covers a breath-taking 50km, if you include Valentia Island.
It starts a short distance from Waterville before following the coast to Ballinskelligs, Portmagee and then on to Valentia.
It can be done as an extension to the Ring of Kerry drive and it includes stops like the Kerry Cliffs, Coomanaspig Pass and more.
Below, you’ll find a map of the route along with an overview of the main stops along the way. Cheers!

The Hellfire Club Walk (AKA ‘the Montpellier Loop’) is a 4.2km trail that takes 1-1.5 hours to complete.
For anyone with a moderate level of fitness, this is one of the more doable Dublin walks and it treats you to a magnificent view out over Dublin.
The trail also takes you to the ruins of a supposedly haunted lodge and you can explore its upper and lower floors, but more on that, and a map, below. Cheers!

There are two versions of the Poolbeg Lighthouse Walk (officially known as the Great South Wall Walk).
The long version starts out on Sandymount Strand while the short version starts from the car park on Pigeon House Road. Here’s some key info:
The long walk: 11km and takes 1.5 – 2 hours
The short walk: 4km and takes 40 – 60 minutes
Widely considered as one of the best walks in Dublin, these trails take you out into the heart of Dublin Bay. Find maps of both trails along with parking/public transport info below! Enjoy!
