Navy League of the United States

The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt. No president before him had shown such enthusiastic interest in the Navy, or such firm grasp of its functions and use in foreign affairs. During his first administration, ten new battleships and 21 smaller craft were authorized. It was at this time that a number of prominent New Yorkers, interested in maintaining American defense against aggression, met on November 20, 1902, at the New York Yacht Club to form “a society to insure the United States against the possibility of being i ..read more

Government Shutdown, Elections, International News
Navy League of the United States

Once again, a very tumultuous week in national and international news. Let’s get right into it. We are one week away from a government shutdown. Senate Democrats are procedurally moving forward on a Continuing Resolution to keep the government funded amidst ongoing negotiations. House Republicans are expected to unveil their own Continuing Resolution proposal on Saturday but several questions remain. The first is whether the bill will be a “clean” CR or if it will contain the steep spending cuts demanded by GOP hardliners. If it is the latter, it will face stiff resistance in the Senate. Franchetti confirmed, House passes Israel Aid Package
Navy League of the United States

Perhaps it was due to the lull that follows Halloween festivities, but this was a relatively calm week in Washington with some positive developments. The Senate confirmed Adm. Lisa Franchetti as CNO and also confirmed Lt. Gen. Christopher Mahoney as Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, an important development as USMC Commandant Gen. Eric Smith remains absent due to a medical emergency. The House passed a $14.3 billion Israel aid package along mostly partisan lines. The bill’s proposed means of paying for the aid came from cuts to the IRS, which is not supported by House Democrats. The bi ..read more

New Speaker of the House
Navy League of the United States

Another week chock full of newsworthy events. Let’s get right into it. The House elected Congressman Mike Johnson of Louisiana to be the new Speaker. Congressman Johnson moved quickly to pass an energy bill which, although unlikely to make it past the Senate due to several partisan provisions, demonstrates that the House is back in order and this Speaker means to get things done. He has also signaled support for aid to Israel and, likely, additional aid to Ukraine. In the Senate, an effort is afoot to circumvent Senator Tuberville’s hold on hundreds of military promotions. The process, which m ..read more

Hello all, and welcome to another incredibly noteworthy week in foreign and domestic affairs. President Biden used his second Oval Office Address to urge Congress and the American people to support efforts to aid Ukraine and Israel. Specifically, the President is seeking a package of $100 billion to be divided between aid for the two nations. “History has taught us, when terrorists don’t pay a price for their terror, when dictators don’t pay a price for aggression, they cause more chaos and death and more destruction. They keep going, and the cost and the threats to America and the world keep ..read more

Happy Navy Birthday!
Navy League of the United States

Happy Navy Birthday everyone! We certainly hope that you spend some time this weekend celebrating this important occasion because, let’s be honest, there is little good news to report on this week. The death toll continues to rise from Hamas’ brutal attack on Israel, the House still lacks a Speaker, and a United States Senator has been charged with acting as a foreign agent. This author will take comfort in watching his beloved Philadelphia Phillies advance to the National League Championship Series and hopes that each of you may also find something positive to focus on over the coming days.
