Please may I request shared experience if possible from birders:
I have a camera and long zoom lens for my birding. Principally the aim is to obtain a photo or photos for the purpose of later identification and study of the bird, so as to maybe clinch an id that way. Although achieving lovely images is nice, it is is not the primary goal. Rather one wants to record bird id features as best as possible to examine later on the computer.
I have recently thinking to achieve this aim better, it...

It is now almost five years since I obtained my first DSLR (Nikon D7100) as well as my first long lens (Sigma 150mm to 600mm). At the time I had been doing my birding with a bridge camera and wanted to go so another level. The second hand market proved useful to me for the gear as I had and have a limited budget
Being more of a birder with a camera than a photographer per se, have found my experience with the set up mentioned really good. Thousands of nice pics have been accrued.
As any...

Hi I currently have a Nikon d5300 and a vintage canon 400mm prime lens. I want to change my actual camera and I'm considering the Nikon d700 or Nikon d750 or Nikon d7200.
I was thrilled with the d700 but I'm not sure if the 12mp will give too little space for cropping. The Nikon d750 has more mp and video but lacks the reputation of the d700. I've found more people using the d7200 due the cropping factor of dx sensor.
I'm into manual focus vintage lenses, and I've read that the d700 has a...

I've been doing some poking around the internet looking for new camera kit to use while birding.
Using no particular reasoning this is a list I've put together of some kits that seem to me like they might work.
Would love to hear your thoughts ..read more

Available direct from OM Digital Systems as well as authorized retailers.
Not all lenses have a discount, but the ones I saw were in the $200 to $500 discount range.
So - if you were thinking about getting some of this gear - now could be a could time ..read more

Lightroom isn't exactly cheap, but my monthly subscription has made me much happier with my pics.
One feature that is very useful, or unique, is the community edits where you can see someone's (selected) pics, and see exactly what they have done to it in processing, and how much crop etc.
Plus the camera make and model, and settings.
Might help people make a more informed decision in choosing cameras etc, if they can see the workings behind the pics, and the conditions, distance etc.
Mine...

Recently saw some internet threads about the old Nikon 1 system. Some suggested that of any 70-300 lens ever made, this tiny Nikon (which then has a 2.7x crop to yield a 180-810 equivalent AOV) is maybe the sharpest lens ever built. And the body and lens are postively tiny together weghing under 1k total. Curious if anyone here has any experience with this combo?
I saw that Thomas Stirr used to use this combo but switched a couple years back to the OM-1 EM1X - which is a relatively giant...

For UK birding I still use my old Slik D3 tripod that lives in the boot of my car and still works fine. But for travel abroad, I'm loojing at buying something more compact and lighter weight. For an upcoming trip to Ghana is like to travel light so could anyone recommend a lighter weight model that is compact enough for hand luggage but that still has good build quality? Many thanks ..read more
