Please may I request shared experience if possible from birders: I have a camera and long zoom lens for my birding. Principally the aim is to obtain a photo or photos for the purpose of later identification and study of the bird, so as to maybe clinch an id that way. Hi I currently have a Nikon d5300 and a vintage canon 400mm prime lens. I want to change my actual camera and I'm considering the Nikon d700 or Nikon d750 or Nikon d7200. I was thrilled with the d700 but I'm not sure if the 12mp will give too little space for cropping. The Nikon d750 has more mp and video but lacks the reputation of the d700. Lightroom isn't exactly cheap, but my monthly subscription has made me much happier with my pics. One feature that is very useful, or unique, is the community edits where you can see someone's (selected) pics, and see exactly what they have done to it in processing, and how much crop etc. Plus the camera make and model, and settings. Recently saw some internet threads about the old Nikon 1 system. Some suggested that of any 70-300 lens ever made, this tiny Nikon (which then has a 2.7x crop to yield a 180-810 equivalent AOV) is maybe the sharpest lens ever built. And the body and lens are postively tiny together weghing under 1k total. Curious if anyone here has any experience with this combo? For UK birding I still use my old Slik D3 tripod that lives in the boot of my car and still works fine. But for travel abroad, I'm loojing at buying something more compact and lighter weight.
