Recommendations for International Research Competitions

Hello everyone, my name is Andii and I am new here. I know this may not be a relatable question to ask, but I hope someone can help me. I have been searching for International/European and/or American astronomy and astrophysical research competitions for the past 5 months or so. I would like to present my research works on variable stars and other areas that interest me, such as Active Galactic Nuclei. If anyone can recommend any research competitions where I can present my work and possibly win awards, I would be grateful. I would prefer to visit these competitions online, but I am also open ..read more

Today's APOD [ here] tells some of the story of the Sun's color history. The Thomson Scattering effect of sunlight through the corona reveals the Sun's true color, but this image is filter-free. With filters, the Sun goes back to playing the yellow Sun game ..read more

Is it possible to see a diamond ring effect without seeing totality?

I live in upstate NY about three and a half hours from the totality line ,and decided to drive up via the 87. unfortunately we were stuck in traffic and had to refuel while running pretty late. At 3:15 we took exit 26 and stopped there assuming we where in the line of totality. however we weren't, we missed it with a few miles. but, we did see the corona of the sun as well as Saturn and Venus. the sun looked like the pictures of diamond ring affect and it was that way for over a minute. I'd like to know if anyone has any idea off what I experienced or has heard of something like this before ..read more

Black Hole Jet connected to... I have a question for the Astronomer. The image is a section of the very first test image James Webb Space Telescope captured with the near-infrared camera (NIRcam). (See image by clicking Link below). You can see the hot gas swirling around the accretion disk on a black hole, in the near-infrared light spectrum. It's located in the star constellation, named Draco. Link to the image: https://photos.app.goo.gl/SmLSS9EcmgUL5rjL8 What do you believe the object to the left is? The object on the right is most likely a rogue supermassive black hole. It is typical ..read more

Hi everyone, this is my first post. A few days back, I took this photo with my phone's camera. I thought it was a normal shot of the night sky, but this bluish-green coloured thing caught my attention. Can anyone please tell me what it is? I cannot upload the photo, so you'll have to see it through this Drive link, sorry! PLEASE SEE THAT YOUR SCREEN BRIGHTNESS IS FULL. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vJeF5RpICHvuf05duJ2EtFrFr61fsYaZ/view?usp=drivesdk Thank you ..read more

What Would Happen if the Earth Started Spinning in the Other Direction?
Space Forum » Astronomy
by SaraRayne

We can’t feel it, but we’re happily spinning through space on this globe we call the Earth at about 1000 mph at the equator. From above, Earth is turning counterclockwise in a prograde motion, which means the planet moves west to east relative to the stars. This is how we’ve moved since the Earth first formed...but what if, like Venus, the Earth spun in the opposite direction? Would anything change? 1. As sure as the sun rises in the west. The first thing you would notice would be the opposite patterns of the movements of the Sun, Moon, and the stars. Instead of rising in the east and setti ..read more

Star Spectrums

This might seem absurd because this is from what I have heard and read. I don't know the weeds of astronomy. But I wonder if anyone has ever done this. I am assuming that we have many decades of recorded star spectrums. And I thought that if space is really distorted around the objects in it, that distortion should be directly proportional to the mass of a star. This might shift, distort or disturb the starlight, proportional to the mass. So, somewhere within that star's spectrum there might be a mass signature. It might be very slight. Perhaps this would be a job for A.I. If it's a small s ..read more

Is Gravitational time dilation due to gravity?
Space Forum » Astronomy
by Greenlight

In the center of the earth, the force due to the upper half of the Earth cancels the force due to the lower half at the center of the Earth. Similarly, any force due to any portion of the Earth at its center will be cancelled by the portion opposite to it. As a result, the gravitational force at the center of anybody will be zero. If there is zero gravitational force does gravitational time dilation also cancel out ..read more
