What that uncomfortable feeling is really telling you.

When we are learning we are growing.  Weekly, I am challenged with this because being uncomfortable is necessary for growth. It takes work. Yesterday, I confessed to a friend and mentor, “Sometimes, I’m just tired of all of it.”   Uncomfort is telling you something especially when it comes to your human interactions. When there are people in my life who challenge me, the ones I struggle to understand, or even be around, how in the world does a Life Coach coach the Coach?  Is this a lesson in boundaries or shadows? Can I actually just not like a person and remove them from my li ..read more

All smiles on R-Day, July 1 2024, West Point. “Cadets, Family and Friends, please rise.  You have 90 seconds to say your goodbyes.”   It’s been three weeks since we heard those words.   It’s been two weeks since we heard his voice. It’s been four days since we received a letter.  His friends weren’t surprised.  His teachers were proud.  His community was impressed.  His parents braced for the reality.  The youngest, our third wheel for eight years, is at Cadet Basic Training at West Point. He isn’t allowed a phone (unless he is given the opportunity to ..read more

The Lesson of an Empty Nest

Photo by Emma Schell on Unsplash I’m taking a 13-month course with Russ Hudson and Jessica Dibb, masters of the Enneagram, although they would not use that label.  Every week I walk away with my mind blown.  Weeks ago, we were taught, albeit briefly, the Law of Three.  Since then I have been chewing on this little nugget, contemplating how this shows up in my life.  In the Learning Lab part of the course, we were asked to consider how polarity shows up in our lives.  I have to say, this was one of the easier questions posed and I still struggled with it. Polarity? Hmm ..read more

Spiral of Discovery: Core Longing and True Self

You made it - the center of the spiral, our final destination. Today’s blog is a listing of our core longings and True Self (our greatest strengths). I have linked my Path to Wholeness blogs to each one as they go a little more into how we get to this True Self identity. All of these blogs, but this one in particular, warrants some deep reflection and contemplation. You will want to read your type, reflect on what it means to you, and how showing up with deep presence can give you a glimpse into living into your True Self potential. Type One: Path to Wholeness Blog Core longing:  Yo ..read more

Spiral of Discovery: Virtues

The Virtues of the Enneagram show us the path to Wholeness. They are the qualities we aspire to lean into while being present, shedding our neural fixations (Saboteurs), our Passions, and the rest of the stories and or coping mechanisms our Ego has conditioned us to live in this world. I learned the following information from Chris Heuertz’s book The Enneagram of Belonging. Enjoy the learning! Here is the rundown Type by Type: Type One: From Anger to Serenity SERENITY IS A WAY OF BEING THAT IS FREE OF ATTACHMENT TO SPECIFIC WAYS OF DOING THINGS - TO HAVING TO CONFORM TO THE RIGHT WAY.&nb ..read more

Spiral of Discovery: Fears and Desires

These blogs are not for the faint of heart.  They take you deep inside to places you may not want to face. With observation, reflection and maybe even some development throw in (which is the whole point!) you will see transformation.  Let’s get to this week’s topic:  Basic Fear and Desire.     I can’t talk about the Basic Fear of each type without discussing the Desire of each one.  They go hand in hand as you will see.  But where do these Desires and Fears come from?  For that, we need to go back in time and revisit the Childhood Messages. These messag ..read more

Spiral of Discovery: Fixations

As we continue through the Spiral of Discovery, we encounter a bit more icky-ness, but we have to go through this to get to our Essence.  We have to uncover all of the personality parts to get to the good stuff - our Essence, our True Self.   The Enneagram fixations refer to habitual patterns of thinking associated with each Enneagram type. These fixations can limit our perspective and behavior. They are our human response to our suffering, our Passion (check out last week’s blog here) and show up as neural fixations, or neural addictions.   They look a lot like our Sabote ..read more

Spiral of Discovery: Passion (Shadow)

Just as the Childhood message is the beginning of the deeper dive into your True Self, so is the Passion.  Recently in the class I’m taking, the instructors called it our “suffering.”  What they mean by suffering, is our separation from Source through personality/ego.  The further away we become from our True Selves, the closer we associate ourselves with our ego and personality. The Passion in Enneagram terminology is our Shadow.  I have to tell you, I wasn’t big on thinking about Shadow work.  I remember privately admitting to only myself I didn’t think I had any wo ..read more

Spiral of Discovery: Childhood Messages

As we travel through the Spiral of Discovery we are now at Childhood Messages.   There are different terms in the Enneagram world for this - wounded child, kid-life crisis, unconscious childhood message and probably more.  When I am doing a typing session with people sometimes this is the differentiator.  Other times it can lead to more confusion.  I can tell you this, if you read these below and say “OMG, that was my message growing up” then you need to listen to that.  It may be the key to nailing your type or not.   Also, an important note about these messages ..read more

Spiral of Discovery: Triads

Because the Enneagram doesn’t belong to one person or institute, you will find as you deep dive there are plenty of theories discussed. One such theory is the triad, or should I say triad(s), since there are quite a few theories grouping the numbers into different aspects. Today, I will cover just a couple of these, otherwise, the weeds get a little thick. I think the most important one is the Harmonic triad as it sheds light on our differing conflict styles. This triad can help type identify the people in your life (or at least narrow their type down) because pretty much everyone can point f ..read more
