Will I be compensated or not?

At the beginning of April, I decided to take my old FJR1200 to the supermarket as it got a huge top box and panniers. I loaded up the old girl with the essentials to get through lockdown i.e. bread, milk, eggs, beer etc. So far, so good. I was nearly home when a lad reversed off his Nan’s drive, straight in front of me. I yanked on the anchors, lost the front end and tasted the tarmac unfortunately. One broken leg, one broken wrist, and a dozen broken eggs (the beer survived. Hoorah!). We’re now a couple of months on and the young lad’s insurer are saying because there was no contact, its not ..read more

Brake Checked

Am I piddling into the wind with this one? I have gone to work in Manchester city centre pretty much every day for the last few years on my trusted Honda NC750X. Whilst its probably the least exciting bike in my collection (I have a few) it was (note past tense) without doubt the most reliable and economical. In June I was in the middle lane of three when some young lad overtook me using the outside lane, pulled in front of me and then braked suddenly, slowing down when there was absolutely faff all in front of him. Despite being on the anchors quicksmart, I couldn’t avoid smashing into the re ..read more

Hire bike hell…

Twelve months ago, I was filtering between lanes two and three on the M25. A van just pulled out from lane three into two and took me out. However, the van driver’s insurer is kicking off about a credit hire bike I got via a company my insurance broker put me in contact with. The van driver’ insurer reckons I didn’t need a hire bike, at least for the first two months, as my arm was in a cast. To be fair, I didn’t really need it as I couldn’t ride, but said wouldn’t be the credit bike hire company liable for anything, so I took the bike. However, it is now right royally kicking off with the hir ..read more

Surf’s up

I was taking my bike in for a service. On the way I ended up behind a VW campervan which appeared to have everything including the kitchen sink inside it, and two surfboards tied on top (subsequently I found out they were heading on a camping/surfing trip). They were cruising along at about 50mph in a 60mph limit. As I was looking to overtake them, they hit a bump and the next thing one of the surfboards fell off the top of the wagon and bounced into the road in front of me. I stood absolutely no chance of avoiding it and the next thing I know I’m looking skywards completely winded and struggl ..read more

IAM Instructor Vs Lorry – who was at fault?
White Dalton Motorcycle Solicitors Blog
by Andrew Prendergast

I am an IAM instructor and have also done my ROSPA gold so I know how to ride and have great observational skills, even if I do say so myself. Two months ago I went out on my own to blow away the cobwebs. About an hour in I came up behind a large beer delivery lorry. Despite being a 60mph limit, this plonker was trundling along at about 20mph. He seemed a bit hesitant. I followed him for about 500 yards and once I’d established it was safe to overtake (the road straightened up) I opened up my BMW R1150GS to make progress, as you’re meant to, and get past him. However, as I was alongside, he ju ..read more
