Strange Behavior in the Bush: Seeking Insight on a Peculiar Deer Encounter

Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well. I've got a question about something I saw in the bush last week. I was out bush stalking when I stumbled upon a deer doing some strange stuff. It was rolling around on its back, kicking its back legs against a tree, and its neck and head were twisted back in an odd way. At first, I thought maybe it was just trying to get up, but the neck thing threw me off. I've asked around, but no one seems to have any answers. Has anyone else seen something like this or have any idea what might have been going on? Thanks, and looking forward to your thoughts ..read more

Undecided what forum to put this qn in so the magazine will do.Any jokers familiar with NRA type shooting with a knowledge about range rifles.Ive got a tidy '43 Long Branch that must have a back story to it.SOS marked.Std 2 groove bbl lapped bore to mirror shine.I,d rate the bore condition as 11/10 if that is possible? The std 2 stage has been worked to now a single stage with a useful 4 lb ish let off.Had a battle flip on it when I got it.So I,m assuming it's been set up for range work ,maybe in a different configuration earlier. The interesting distinguishing feature is two painted yellow disk ..read more

So the Vintage Rifle scene has been pretty quiet on the forum lately and it falls to me to stir things up So what happens when that crazy old rifle guy ( old rifle not old guy ? ) buys a SHOTGUN Well me buying a shotgun is about as out of character as my buying a Martini rifle ! Now I have several forum members to think for my getting this shotgun. One alerted me to its availability to be purchesed One did the pick up from the vendor and held it for me Another did the final pick up and transport to CHCH where I finally got to see my prize, after being told by all that I would be delighted w ..read more

We've debated this before. Here's some of that rare commodity known as "evidence". Vehicle: 2014 Gen 7 Hilux (KUN26R) with the 1KD-FTV motor, 150,000km Use: Overlanding around Aus, then hunting and general rural lifestyle in NZ. At least half the mileage has been towing a camper trailer or quad & bike, the remainder carrying a constant full load, with a great deal of hard off-road driving. Air lockers front & rear, lots of other off-roady mods. There were four options to prevent the infamous diesel engine intake blockage: EGR blanking plate (complete blank or 7mm hole) Fit a catch ..read more

My roar has been pretty quiet with just a weekend and a day hunt fitting into my schedule due to some relatively time intensive commitments at work this year. A few of my mates went hunting for in Norway last year where some good buggers were generous enough to host them. Tov, being one of those good buggers is currently in NZ for a month of hunting so it was time to return the favour. Within 48hours we had him into the Ruahines chasing roaring reds for the weekend. I’ll let the video tell the rest. https://youtu.be/2BZ4pLtQk7Q?si=yrLSiP9XXblzg-8b ..read more

Right, long story short, took the 223 out and couldn't shoot for sh.. To the point that was asked if I'd ever shot before! Admittedly it was 25 odd (maybe more) years ago and I now don't drink a 40oz, smoke 30cigs and now wear glasses. So anyway after blaming loose suppressor, crap scope (package deal) and not so tight scope rings. I started naval gazing. Consulted financial officer who suddenly discovered the price of ammo, she suggested I get myself a 22lr semi target rifle and get practicing, then she pressed buy now on a second hand but never used Ruger Precision 22lr. Now have studied the ..read more

NZ made vest?

G'day, Looking for an NZ made vest for hunting. Kiwi made gear is always a preference though I will consider something made in Aus, the states or Europe, but nothing in asia. Something warm in the winter that has a few pockets for my bits and bobs. I've been looking at Stix Mill's multi pocket oilskin vest, they look good but haven't ever seen one. Any opinions on them or any other good quality options that can take beating through rough bush are appreciated. I'm a fair tool myself already and I don't need help looking any moreso, so a hard no on anything camo. One last thing, I'll probab ..read more

Hi everyone, Im located in the Hamilton area and I've got a young GSP that I'm teaching to snuff out rabbits possums and birds, we've got most of the vermon well under control on the farm where my partner works now which is great for the environment but not for training lol. Just wondering if anyone round the waikato area wants their pests taken care of because I'd love to keep going out but slim pickings atm. The pup (10 months) is good with stock and fully vaxxed, registered and chipped with good recal etc. I'm a licensed firearms holder and my proffesion is sheep and beef stock manager. B ..read more
