Hello, We have been trying to search for my wife's mother who left when my wife was only a toddler, seventy years ago. Her older siblings had no information either and have now passed. All we have is her father and mothers wedding certificate, which has the mothers maiden name, date of birth in 1913 and her fathers name. We have spent time searching for over two years now with no luck at all. The surname is a common name so have spent hours searching. Spent time at the local library using the 1921 census but still no luck. The only info we have is her maiden name, date of birth, father's name ..read more

General research queries • Ann Brenning, my 5th great grandmother

Hi everyone, I have a massive ongoing mystery with my 5th great grandmother, Ann Brenning. She married Henry Macey in 1781, Plymouth and in the record his surname is spelt as 'Mascey'. I have his side covered, but this is the earliest document I can find regarding Ann - her surname is actually spelt as Brenning on the document and I have tried relentlessly to find anything about her prior to being married, however nothing seems to be popping up, even with wildcard searches. The marriage record states her as being a spinster and there's nothing to reveal her age from her death record either ..read more

Soon after my father died, I was going through some paperwork and found my great-aunt's will. Great aunt Flo Lamin was my birth grandmother's sister and remained a spinster - my mother's birth mother died when my mother was 2½ and my grandfather remarried 2 years later. Said great aunt, I believe, effectively brought up my mother for a while, probably continuing after grandfather's remarriage, as I am fairly sure that my mother did not initially get on with her stepmother. Anyway back to the paperwork and in her will, Flo left two thirds of her estate to my mother and one third to someone I ha ..read more

IMO it is really poor to have no less than 207 files in series WO 423 (Other Ranks and Nurses) where the Christian name of the person is missing from TNA's Discovery catalogue and is catalogued as "[Unspecified]", including the one below which has no name at all. WO 423/188943: [1939-1963]: Name: [Unspecified] 221791. Service number: 3649699. Date of birth: 22 April 1905. See https://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine ... rd-records. That is an interesting article (thanks WDYTYA mag) because it contains the clearest statement I've yet seen about how the commercial relationship works - e.g. no, TNA are not paying their contractors. It's worth following the links to the TNA notice https://www.contractsfinder.service.gov ... e5a8feeb29 and from there to the PDF about MOD Service Records, Home Guards, Collation 110057 Digitisation and Licensing Procurement Document since that PDF makes a loose indication about GDPR implications. DNA • John Way b 1780 Isle of Wight

Apologies for the fairly long preamble! I have a DNA match through Ancestry who is descended from this person and am trying to prove it to my own satisfaction rather than just relying on thrulines. John Way (b 1780) was a butcher, the son of John Way (b 1753 Atherfield, d 1820 Shorwell) and Frances White (b 1754 Newchurch IOW m 18/7/1775 Binstead IOW, d 1806 Shorwell), who were fourth great grandparents. He moved to the mainland at some point and married Ann (surname unknwon). They are both shown in the 1841 census in Middle Street, Portsea (he as a butcher). There's an 1812 marriage in Ports ..read more

I know many use this site frequently and successfully but it baffles me. I'm trying to source film or images of the original baptismal register of 1732 for Edlesborough, Bucks. There's an unnamed male child baptised for John and Elin Green and I want to see for myself why there is no name - is it blank in the original or obscured or damaged? Is it viewable online or at a FS centre? Can anyone help please? When I try via the FS site I get to a page that says 'how to use this catalogue' and then moved to another page with highlighted links that just take me back to the beginning. Frustrating ..read more

General research queries • Missing Marriage

On my tree I have a marriage between John Curtis Savage and Mary Sear on 15 October 1784 at Milton Keynes, Bucks. The same couple and date are found on many Ancestry trees BUT I can't find any evidence of the marriage and the Ancestry trees don't provide evidence either. Can anyone help please? The Buckinghamshire Marriage Index on FMP has a marriage on the right date, at the right place between a John and a Mary but different surnames suggesting transcription issues. It's very possible that I copied this from a tree a long time ago and didn't check (I know, very naughty) until now. Can anyo ..read more
