Hi. My grandmas mum (my mums mum) lived at 57 Hague Row, Park Hill until her death in 1972 age 73. Maggie Anderson. Never married. Had two children in the late 20’s Stanley and Jean. I’ve noticed lots of chat about the floors but not much is mentioned about this one.  I was born in 84. Is it correct all of Hyde Park was demolished and all of Park Hill is still standing? Why was it knocked down? I know they did Park Hill up years back. I’ve been looking to see which area was in each block. I can’t see anywhere where it says this. Is there a diagram? floor plans?  Was Hague Row definit ..read more

Looking for help/information to determine the location of Broom Bank House (Broombank House) on Glossop Road, former home of John Vickers (1768-1842) Britannia Metal manufacturer. Whites Directory had his residential address in 1833 and 1837 as Broom Hill/Broomhill, Henry & Thos. Rodgers Sheff & Roth Directory (1841) listed Broom Bank, Glossop Road and his burial record stated his abode as Glossop Road. Similarly, John and his wife Ann are listed at Broomhill on the 1841 census. From https://hawleysheffieldknives.com/, "[John Vickers] died at Broombank House, Glossop Road, on ..read more

Hi All, I have recently acquired a photo album from a local auction house, as it is my hobby, to try and trace living relatives and return their property to their rightfull families. However I am at a loss as to trace the family of this album as it is nearly all based on surnames and no first names. I do know that the album belonged to Mr Wilfred Fawdington Stanley, born in Wortley in 1874 and I have managed to do most of the Stanley family tree. The only problem is, there is only about six pictures of the Stanley family and around 150 other pictures ,who were just friends and neighbours. It i ..read more

Researching a house

I'm trying to research an old house (not in Sheffield) and wondered if anyone has done this and could offer me some advice as to where to start. I've read (on a family tree) that the house was bought in 1687 for £300, but it seems such a lot of money to me as the house isn't very big.  I can't ask the present owners as I'm doing it as a gift. Looking for record relating to filesmith Francis Hawke

I’m stuck with one of my ancestors, James Vickers (c1737-1809), so I’ve been researching his acquaintances. This lead me to look at Francis Hawke, a filesmith and fellow Methodist, who was buried in Sheffield on 25th October 1805. From “Reminiscences of Old Sheffield”, Hawke’s sister was James Vickers’ first wife. Another sister of Hawke’s married Josiah Stephenson. I’ve found a record for John Vickers (who possibly was James’ son) marrying a Sarah Hawke in Sheffield on 29th Feb 1788. Witness was George Butcher (who was possibly John’s brother-in-law), but again struggling to break through - l ..read more
