With the high mortality rate for children in the past I do wonder how our ancestors dealt with this ever present threat. Was it viewed as big a tragedy as it would be now or was it just accepted as a fact of life? How did parents who lost multiple and sometimes all their children cope? It's hard to imagine. And would they feel bitter to family and neighbours that lost none?
For Birmingham were there specific streets that had a higher mortality rate than others? Did people who had lived in...

I am trying to trace the relatives of people who knew my grandparents - Cyrus and Mary Field. They lived at 42 Serpentine Road, Harborne between 1920 and 1952. They had 5 children:- James, Doris, Edna, Barbara and Diamond. Neighbours names that I can recall are Harry & Isobel Minchin, Reginald & Anne Brett, William & Sarah Lester, Abert & Isabel Dutton. In particular, I was hoping someone who was friendly with the family might recall what happened to Barbara. The story goes that she had a...

Hello all. I've just found this site after following links on various sites, while looking into my family ancestry. On looking at the 1939 census, my nanna is recorded as being a cleaner finisher in munitions factory. On speaking to my nans last remaining sister she mentioned it was 'over Birmingham way'. Was wondering if anyone has any information about such sites and where / how many they were asbthisbwas a total shock to us and especially my dad. Thanks ..read more

Been browsing through old newspapers and found an article in which my ancestor appears to have been in rent arrears at 2 bk of 13 Fox Street and 3 Fox Street, Bailiffs (Rabnett & Co.) were called in on behalf of the morgagees of both properties - The Robin Hood Society. I would love to know if they were the 'social housing' of the day. Does anyone have any information about them?
