Once upon a time, the small English town of Pontefract were experts in growing liquorice root which they formed into jet black sweet liquorice ‘Pontefract cakes’, affectionally known as ‘The Yorkshire Penny’. “Born in Pontefract” Caribbean rum was imported in wooden oak barrels and would often contaminate with salty seawater.
