It was good to see you both - congratulations on your medal positions.
Great summaries - I'm glad it wasn't just me struggling with the Classics!

Congrats Tom!
I've never particularly liked the kind of classics that they used where there's no real pattern or flow to the solve, but I did enjoy the challenge in a way.
It was a good excuse for a day out in London anyway, not sure I'd do the same next year when I think they said the venue is moving to Mallorca!

The whole thread is about Grand Prix so hopefully people can correctly infer that this is a Grand Prix ranking, as is this wrap up of the Puzzle Grand Prix.
Round 8's standout performer was certainly James McGowan, topping his previous best position of #8 with a #3 placing,, and a 36% increase on his recent average. Outside this, marks were hard to come by and many puzzlers failed to reach their recent average in this round, but Calum Mailer was another highlight, with a 27% increase on his recent average and a new high position of #61.
Now that we are at the end of the season, a review of t ..read more

Adam - whilst this ranking is perhaps a good reflection of what’s happened in the GP, I’m not totally convinced it gives a satisfying ranking - not least because David McNeill isn’t on it. Rather than presenting as a definitive UK ranking, could you make clearer this is more about the GP, and that its main advantage over the actual GP rankings is that it allows comparison even when participants don’t have a full set of rounds?

I think there were three of us there from this parish on Tuesday - myself, Calum and David C. Looks like results are now ready:
Gold - Tom Collyer
Silver - Dusan Sobot
Bronze - Calum Mailer
The format I think was similar to the previous couple of years:
- Four different sets: Classics, Diagonal, "Killer" and KenKen
- The points between different sets didn't seem to have any consistency
- The "Killer" section had irregular grids this time, and also allowed the other arithmetic operations as well
- The Classics were brutally hard, and basically I had to guess at all 8, sometimes with multiple ..read more

The final Sudoku GP of the year is now done and it was a mixed bag with some solvers doing better than average and some doing worse. The obvious highlight from a UK perspective was Matt Siegfried topping 500 points for the first time in #51, but there were a few other strong performances worthy of note; Ned Walker in #114 was 21% up on his recent average, Michael Walker in #219 achieved his highest score to date and Mike Colloby in #246 was nearly 30% up on his recent average.
All in all, over the year, there were a few people who've seen big improvements in their UK ranking: Matt Siegfried i ..read more

I might make the journey down for this, as I would like to get a few more in-person competitions under my belt.
Just got to figure out the best way to get there for that early in the morning

Puzzle Round 7 results are out, and many found points hard to come by, though many of the year's form puzzlers were in or around the top 100 again. Two performances stand out; Matthew White in #61 scoring 429 points, about 20% up on his recent average, and Ben Woodley in #139, also about 20% up on his recent average, with this being his first showing in the top 150 too. Maurice Blount also achieved his best finish to date, with #68.
Well done all of you.
