A visit to the Wild Atlantic Way
Kieran Russell Photography Blog

On a quick visit to the Atlantic coast recently I managed to explore this section of cliffs, an area that I had wanted to visit for some time now. While conditions might have been damp and cloudy with rain rolling in later in the hike, I felt it suited the location. There are a few compositional issues I tried to resolve while there but with almost no movement available from my precarious perch I had to live with some of the compromises. Isolating the main crag was the biggest one but could not get the angle to do so. Showing the base of the stack I felt was also important to help with scale ..read more

Caliso bay, Co Waterford
Kieran Russell Photography Blog

The trawl through the archives continues as this lockdown persists. This set of images are from the beautifully named Caliso Bay in West Waterford. I had considered these images a “work in progress” and there is still some more potential to be explored more fully but I will add to it in future. This is a beach that is often overlooked for some of the more popular areas in the locality. This first subject on the beach was a washed up tree trunk, captured a few years ago. It was a very opportunistic shoot and the intention was to revisit it in better light and with the tide in around the roots ..read more

The "Secret Cove" revisited
Kieran Russell Photography Blog
by Kieran Russell

Another “revisited” post, this time from a location I began photographing in 2015, link here to the previous post. After many visits and hours spent here, as stunning as it is, I feel there are only a few compositions that work well in my opinion. Ironically the very first image I took here is still my favourite , which is very unusual for me as i tend to refine the compositions over time. This is replicated above but left in colour as I felt the subtle light worked well, and also from a slightly higher elevation. The very obvious subject in this cove is the huge sea stack, and the biggest c ..read more

Autumn Colour 2020
Kieran Russell Photography Blog

I usually try and compile a few images taken during the Autumn months here in Ireland, however this year with a level 5 Covid 19 restrictions on travel, the opportunities were limited. Many of these images were taken before the lockdown and were really only scouting trips with the intention to return once the best of the colour developed. Making the most of woodland photography is really difficult and old woodland is hard to find in ireland. I have tried to put the hours into walking through woodlands, off the path, to try and find subjects but the reward is very often not worth it as the fa ..read more

The ever changing Coastline
Kieran Russell Photography Blog
by Kieran Russell

This particular beach on the Copper Coast seem to have a particularly fluid makeup. It can transition from sandy beach, to gravel, to large pebbles to large boulders all the the space of a few weeks. This can make this area quite interesting to visit. I have published a post from this area before, linked here, and essentially these images are what I have been able to capture since (at least the ones worth sharing). Just a little note on the two images below, not my usual preference due to the strong colours of sunset (which have actually muted slightly in processing), but the following two i ..read more

Copper Coast revisited Part 2
Kieran Russell Photography Blog
by Kieran Russell

In Part 2 of this series I decided to compile the images I felt worked better in colour. In most cases the conditions were quiet overcast and calm so I tried to maintain the muted colours in the images. As with most of these posts, the images are from a number of visits at different tide positions which allowed different perspectives and compositions to be explored. The previous post from this location can be found here (recent) and here (going back a while). On one particular occasion I had particularly nice moment of light as the sun set. Its that low evening light set against dark moody c ..read more

Copper Coast re-visited Part 1
Kieran Russell Photography Blog

In recent posts I’ve been revisiting locations that I have already featured here over the last few years. They are essentially a compilation of images I have captured since initially publishing the first article from a location. At this beach the most notable change in this location has been the formation of a steep bank of rocks that runs along the high tide line which was a much more gradual fall in years past, this could all change of course with one decent storm. I usually visit this location when it as calm as possible and this along with the steep bank gives a very defined shore line w ..read more

Comet Neowise over the Comeragh mountains
Kieran Russell Photography Blog
by Kieran Russell

This a brief post with a few images of the Neowise comet. taken in the Comeragh mountains Just the one location for now but I may try to find another subject, finding something which I can shoot facing North is proving difficult. As you can see from the images they are all quiet similar but lit differently and at slightly different angles. The original intention was to shoot this with a very long focal length to compress the scene but the lay of the land around this standing stone just didn’t allow me to do this effectively. Next post will be back to the Copper coast and revisiting another l ..read more

Ballydowane - Revisited (Ballydwan Bay)
Kieran Russell Photography Blog

My first article from Ballydowane was 4 years ago and I have visited many times since. It remains one of my favorite places and probably the place I will go to if a quick escape to the coastline is required. Many of the images are similar to previous attempts but refined over the years. The area is a constantly changing canvas with the constant shifting of sand and features which can make each visit fresh. With repeat visits the challenge to find new or improved compositions has become increasing difficult, but if I’m in the mood sometimes that’s just what I need. Sometimes the conditions ca ..read more

Benvoy. Another study of one of the many stunning beaches on the Copper Coast. Most of these images date back quiet a few years and this process of going through the archives has fueled much of this post.   The beach is located near Annestown village and is easily accessible with plenty of car park spaces and easy access to the beach.   It is accessible at all tide levels but would probably target a mid to high tide for the best photographic opportunities, in my opinion.  The one characteristic I like about the beach is that the cliffs on the east side take on really str ..read more
