I was camping with the dogs early April in far SW MN and just after sunset the occasional rooster crow soon turned into nonstop cackles, squawks, and crows the like of which I've never heard before. I wish I had a nice microphone with me. I took a quick cell video. I even got a rooster perched on a tree branch. There was also one walking through the woods that I thought was darn near gonna walk right through camp with how loud his cackles were getting as he walked. There were many other... As a middle aged man with no wingshooting history, I now find myself gripped more by upland hunting than anything I've yet to encounter in life. An accidental moving adjacent to a trap range, borrowing a shotgun from a longtime friend, and inviting myself on a duck hunting trip to another state, and now I find myself here. A working man who uses every weekend and vacation day to get out of dodge and chase wild roosters in the far corners on MN, IA, and SD. Not to mention a number of days... Just saw a hen with poults in my yard SE Ohio.....wife thought she counted 19-20 but that would likely be two clutches...dunno. Hen was keeping them warm, moving and feeding then stopping and so on. Interesting on the number. Regardless, they are on the ground...hopefully the rain scheduled over the next couple weeks does not become a burden and the coyotes/bobcats make do with other snacks ..read more

Good evening Folks, I would like to know the basics about turkey hunting. Locally, we have mostly guinea fowl on driven shoots, or francolin over dogs and similar activities. Turkeys don't occur naturally. - Why and how does one hunt a turkey? Nothing else to hunt, especially difficult to hunt, super tasty, pest control? - How easy or difficult is it? I prefer and know walk and stalk on antelope . - What does one do with the meat ..read more

What's the top 5 turkey hunting states?

I'm just asking out of curiosity. I live in MN and have hunted here, SD, and WI. I would say the upper midwest is really strong right now. I've heard Kansas has really fallen off, because that used to be a destination. Not sure how Nebraska held up. It seems like a lot of the traditional turkey states in the SE are down. Haven't heard much about Texas lately ..read more

For you guys that have used them what do you think? What is your experience with them?. I took my Mossberg 500 12ga out to pattern her today. I put a new reflex sight on it and wanted to sight it in for the Longbeards. I will say I got real good patterns out to 40 yards using a 20" barrel with a Primos Tite Wad choke. Actually I could have gone out further but I'm not even shooting a bird at 40 yards. Well maybe LOL ..read more

I took my buddy out to my hot spot Saturday. We were set up about 815, and the turkeys were gobbling, a good sign. They stayed in their strut zone until about 1030, then we noticed the gobbles getting closer. Two identical turkeys came in to his calling/decoys pretty quick and he got one of em about 11am. Anyways, just wondering if you could take a guess, is this a two year old, or do you think older? He's got some decent spurs, but the point wasn't very... Can you age this turkey ..read more
