Looks like we get to hunt until dark next year instead of 1pm? Had a pretty good hatch this year but I would have waited for a couple more in a row before making this change. The changes to fall hunting won't matter much with the limited harvest. Thoughts ..read more

My summer deer plots were a bust because the deer ate everything within a week of germination. Plan B was to plant chufa for turkeys. My soil is extremely sandy, so it’s well suited for chufa.
I used my corn planter for the first time and just planted directly into the destroyed deer plot. I also planted another plot and the firebreaks. We had great soil moisture and rain immediately after planting, so I need to spray the weeds asap because germination won’t take...

My best friend and I just got back from our annual spring turkey hunt. We are privileged to be able to hunt on a friend’s property near Post, TX where he has a nice house that we stay in. He has a water guzzler as well as water troughs for the cows that his neighbor sometimes runs on his place. We cheat and don’t run and gun as we used to, we’re both too old for that ! ?. He has stands near the water that we hunt from, so it’s more like deer hunting than turkey hunting. It’s a pleasurable...

Our dove season opened last Thursday and we had a few birds around...not hundreds but I did see about 40-50 on the opener...every day they have steadily gotten fewer and fewer to the point that this morning I saw 3 and I got 2 of those. I think it may be due to the seed on top of the ground being either moldy or slightly starting to germinate. I threw out a 5 gallon bucket of wheat to see if anything comes back or they have completely moved on. Anybody else seeing dove numbers dwindling ..read more

We installed a flash board riser on an old dike last year to keep salt water out of our drainage ditches. As sea levels rise (which they have been doing for years), salt water is becoming a big problem on the coast.
One benefit of the flash board riser is the ability to hold water (either fresh or brackish) over a 6-7 acre area. The goal now is to try to attract ducks.
Earlier this summer I drained the area and bush hogged the marsh grass, which is fairly useless.

My main dove field has been in Clearfield sunflowers for 5 out of last 6 years. I’ve been thinking of splitting the field in two and rotating sunflowers and something else. I’ve done corn, not that big a fan. I’ve had good and bad results with Proso (white) millet in other fields. Had a great ooops moment in a field last year of buckwheat. Heard good things about sesame but no experience with it. I think wheat might be a good crop to try and Grow to burn for early season and Have the...
