The inventory of landslides includes a total of 169,888 large-scale landslides, covering a combined area of approximately 1575 km2. The average size of these landslides is approximately 92,734 m2. The scale of these landslides varies widely, with the smallest individual landslide covering an area of 166.25 m2 and the largest reaching 12.9 km2. Abstract The Qinling Mountains in China frequently experience geological disasters, with large-scale landslides being particularly prominent, causing severe economic losses to the local area. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the geological disa ..read more

Sediment particle tracking data for the Carpathian reservoir under climate and land use change scenarios

Tracking sediment transport from the riverine source into the reservoir is challenging due to the different character of both hydrological systems. The solution to solve this problem has been offered through integration of two modeling tools on the digital platform Macromodel DNS as presented in the figure. The result of this integration was a database for the Carpathian catchment tracking sediment fractions deposited in specific reservoir zones for the baseline and future climate and land use scenarios. Abstract Although the Carpathian Mts. area is considered as extremely prone to surface e ..read more

To facilitate the sharing of chert information and promote chert research, we have compiled a summary of literature containing chert information worldwide and established the Global Chert Database (GCDB). Our research is carried out within the Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) Big Science Program. Abstract Chert is a sedimentary rock abundant and conspicuous throughout the geologic record. It serves as an essential geological archive and is vital for palaeogeographic reconstruction. The Chert Database Working Group is part of the OneSediment Working Groups of the Deep-time Digital Earth (DDE) Bi ..read more

Preface to the special issue on “Old records for new knowledge”

Studying a changing world requires observations going back in time to extend and contextualize our latest scientific knowledge. Old legacy data exist in non-digital formats. Thus, techniques and methodologies for the preservation, dissemination, interpretation, homogenization, calibration, and use of such legacy data and their associated metadata, as well as for their present scientific use are important topics for advancing our understanding of the changing Earth and of past extreme events. The articles presented in this special issue review different issues involved in these diverse topics ..read more

CAMELS‐SE: Long‐term hydroclimatic observations (1961–2020) across 50 catchments in Sweden as a resource for modelling, education, and collaboration
Wiley Online Library » Geoscience Data Journal
by Claudia Teutschbein
2M ago
We present an openly accessible dataset of daily hydroclimatic variables—precipitation, temperature, and streamflow—across 50 Swedish catchments from 1961 to 2020. This comprehensive 60-year dataset includes not only geographical coordinates and landcover details, but also soil classifications, hydrologic signatures, and regulation data for each catchment. Spanning diverse hydroclimatic, topographic, and environmental catchment properties, it serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners studying hydrological processes, climate dynamics, environmental impacts, and sustainabl ..read more

To help with preparedness efforts of Canadian public health and safety systems for adaptation to climate change, humidex and three threshold-based humidex indices were computed for a multi-model ensemble of climate change projections, over Canada. The ensemble consists of one run from each 19 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) global climate models and offers historical simulations starting in 1950 and future projections out to 2100 following three greenhouse gas emission scenarios: SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. Abstract To help with preparedness efforts of Canadian pub ..read more

Australian Ocean surface waves dataset from SAR
Wiley Online Library » Geoscience Data Journal
by S. Khan, M. Hemer, E. Echevarria, E. King

In this article, a first regional Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) ocean surface waves dataset, containing directional ocean swell spectra measurements from Europe's Sentinel-1 A and B satellites, is described. The goal is to support marine scientific and industrial research in Australia. The dataset is produced under funding from Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) of Australia, and is freely available via Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) Portal as Climate and Forecast 1.6 standard compliant netCDF files. Number of Sentinel-1 A wave observations in 2.5° bins in the wider Australian r ..read more

High‐resolution dataset of nocturnal air temperatures in Bern, Switzerland (2007–2022)
Wiley Online Library » Geoscience Data Journal
by Moritz Burger, Moritz Gubler, Stefan Brönnimann
3M ago
We present a high-resolution dataset covering the mean air temperatures of every night in the summers of 2007–2022 in a medium-sized city in Europe. The dataset is conducted using a land use regression approach that follows the principles of open data and low costs. We apply the dataset for two possible use cases and discuss the applicability and possible extensions as well as the limitations of such a dataset and the technique in general. Abstract To prepare for a hotter future, information on intra-urban temperature distributions is crucial for cities worldwide. In recent years, different ..read more
