Since my design journey began about 2 years ago everything has and is still about learning. I’m a law student and it can be overwhelming combining a challenging degree with a self-directed education in a different path. One of the things that has helped me learn on the go and discover interesting things about the scope and nature of the design industry is podcasts. Before beginning my design journey, I did listen to a few podcasts but not avidly. I stumbled on the first design podcast I ever listened to on Get Clever’s Instagram page. I enjoyed their content so I decided to give the podcast a ..read more

One of my favourite things to discover in 2020 was the design hotel. It is also a big dream of mine to design one some day. Design hotels are hotels most notable for their architecture, design and /or furnishings. Design hotels can have the design as part of their strategy or may be judged as a design hotel after the fact. The Design Hotel is a celebration of interiors and architecture, often supporting the local design economy while creating a space that pushes the needle. As the years have gone by I’ve developed a list of design hotels I have to visit. One of the design hotels I’d love to vi ..read more

We’ve come to the end of this and I’m so excited because this is the episode where the contestants finally design a space. I’ll be reviewing Episode 10 and the Finale as one big episode for continuty’s sake. The episode opens with a quick recap of the entire season. Then the contestants head to Bo Concept , an international furniture and home goods brand with a store in Lagos. They retail contemporary pieces with modern influence. As a side note I found one of their Nigerian catalogues when I was thrifting for design magazines a few weeks ago. They have a good selection of pieces and their sto ..read more

Part 4 of this review already. I’m so excited to review the last 2 episodes which are all about the finale. But you can’t have the cart before the horse so here’s my review of episode 8 and 9. EPISODE 8 – COLOR AND SPACE I think this episode annoyed me because I’m currently studying color theory and most of information provided here is wrong. It was so ground breaking it was to learn that red, blue and yellow are only primary colors of vision and not as relevant while working with colors. A better selection of colors are cyan, magenta and yellow. I’ve been learning all of this from color nerd ..read more

Welcome to the third installment of this review. I’ve decided to speed things up by reviewing 3 episodes at once. I wanted to give up while watching all these episodes. But I did make a promise and I will see it to the end. EPISODE 5- MADE IN NIGERIA Soooo this episode felt like a better? rerun of the forth episode. The episode opened with the contestants being taken to Bogobiri , one of the few design hotels that exist in Nigeria. It is owned and run by Tola Akerele , a designer I mentioned in an earlier post and Chike Nwagbogu. The contestants toured the space and they were able see what the ..read more

2 weekends ago I had a long but exciting day exhibition hopping. It was Lagos Design Week and I finally got a chance to attend events. The first exhibition was the Eko Design: Crafted Living. Eko Design is a part of the Eko series held at Ebony Life center. The curator is Tola Akerele of i Design, who is one of the foremost names in design in Nigeria. I’m not sure if the hosting of the exhibition during design week was intentional. I believe it was because it made sense to have both events running and for audiences to be exposed to as much as they were willing to see. Eko Design’s ethos is to s ..read more

In my earlier post , I said I went exhibition hopping a few weekends ago. The second exhibition was Design Week Lagos‘ Exhibition. I found about Design Week Lagos sometime last year. Since we were in the thick of COVID, the events held online but I thought the event was canceled. This year I was determined not to miss it. It was set to hold from the 21st to 31st of October. I set a reminder to register for their events. I was unfortunately unable to this as their site was unresponsive. I sent emails with no response. Luckily for me, one of the people I follow indicated that I could register fo ..read more

I’m back with the review of the 3rd and 4th episodes of Interiors by Design. If you haven’t read the first installment of this series, you should. This bog post has been sitting in my drafts for nearly 2 weeks. Between work and issues with uploading posts, I’ve been struggling . Maybe it’s high time a professional ran some diagnostics on this site. I think the big question for this post is, Did it get better? Yes and no. Let’s get in to it. EPISODE 3- STYLING This episode is about styling or accessorizing as Titi Fowora calls it. It seemed as though this class first, competition second sequenc ..read more

A few months ago, on my Instagram story, I posted some pictures from a design show I was watching. The first being Interior Design Masters Season 2 and the second was HGTV’s Design Star. You can watch S1 of Interior Design Masters on Netflix. It’s a good watch and the cast is all amateur designers. Design Star is also quite good and I discovered amazing designers from the show. While I was raving about the show, I thought to mention mentioned that Nigeria had a design show called Interiors by Design and I described it as “not good”. I still stand by it but I’d like to give a proper review of t ..read more

IN DEFENSE OF TERRAZZO

I’ve lived in the same house since I was born. By virtue of that house being over 30 years old in Lagos, I has a flooring material I think gets a lot of hate. Terrazzo. Terrazzo is a mosaic flooring consisting of small pieces of marble or granite set in mortar and given a high polish. –Mariam Webster Dictionary Terrazzo was invented in Venice, Italy in the 15th century. However there have been earlier iterations found in Egypt. Workers were left with odd cuts of marble after installation for the upper classes, They set small marble rocks in clay and ground them down to enable comfortable walki ..read more
