Due to legal/political jurisdiction issues (Indigenous affairs are under the purview of the federal government, while disability services are handled by the provincial governments), Indigenous individuals and families might face extra challenges when seeking ASD-related funding supports. We are proud to present to our families a new initiative by the Government of Alberta, in collaboration with the Autism Society of Alberta (ASA): the new Family Resource Centres (FRC), serving individuals and families of all disabilities.
6 regions in Alberta (see chart below) have been designated to provide some very useful services to families. In the past, rural areas have been lacking support services, and we hope that these new Family Resource Centres will provide some much-needed support for these areas.
