We are an international team of Autistic and non-Autistic researchers studying loneliness and wellbeing. Why is the research being conducted? Many researchers measure loneliness in Autistic adults through scales that may not be appropriate for them. We have collaborated with Autistic adults and other experts to adapt a loneliness measure to better suit the Autistic community, as we need to appropriately measure loneliness in order to alleviate it.

Our team at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and York University is working on a study to understand the benefits and challenges of virtual mental health (e-MH) support for school-age autistic children and their families in Canada, with the aim to improve the usefulness of e-MH. We would like to first gather the experiences of caregivers of autistic children who have used e-MH support, and clinicians who have recommended e-MH support for autistic children, via an online survey using the REDCap platform.

The purpose of this study program is to determine the benefits of music-based therapeutic techniques as compared to non-music-based therapeutic techniques to address motor skill development, sensory integration, and behavioural outcomes for children with autism. This study will help to discover possible challenges and benefits regarding music-based motor rehabilitation intervention. Furthermore, it will reveal foundational data about the potential benefits of such an intervention and help to determine if this intervention should be studied further in autistic children.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a popular and controversial form of intervention used with individuals who identify as being on the spectrum. Many self-advocates with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) state that this intervention goes against the neurodiversity movement, a movement which calls for the celebration and acceptance of autism. This study will seek to amplify autistic voices by asking adults on the autism spectrum to share their experiences with ABA-based practices as well as autism related research to gain insight into how improvements can be made to best practices.
