Living In a World of Flashlights While Wearing Night Vision Goggles

I recently saw a post by a dear friend saying that the limitations of others have the potential to bring one down. I am a visual person so when I see phrases, I attribute it to images, analogies and metaphors. Very true words from my friend; however, it made me think of a phrase, ‘Living in a world of flashlights while wearing night vision goggles.’   What the phrase made me ‘see’, is a perspective about leading an organic life. You see, people may not understand the life that I have embraced, or my friend, or any other person who pursues an organic life. What is an organic life? It is wh ..read more

What Platform?…What Train?…Where am I going?
Sam Thiara

Recently, I was in London and when I am there, I am always hoping on a train or using the Underground to get where I need to go. The process is to buy your ticket, stand by the boards and watch when your platform comes up so you know which train to get on. While standing there, you see people rushing about and asking the station master, ‘What platform?’, ‘Which train?’ and then they rush off. What I do is continue to watch the overhead board and wait for my turn. Once my train is ready, I casually stroll to the platform, insert my ticket and get on a car and look forward to arriving at my dest ..read more

How To Succeed and Have It All!
Sam Thiara

I thought the title would capture your attention. I find it interesting that we have our views on success and there are two main ways we define success. Unfortunately, there is an obscure third method of success that is hidden from view from many and if embraced, can lead to the other two ways being realized. So what is the third method of success? Let’s venture into the unknown!   First let’s explore the more obvious two ways. One is money. Many might define their success based on how much money they make and sometimes it is chasing a way that always out distances us because we might get ..read more

Do You CARE?

“Do you care?” A simple phrase and I am sure many people would say, “Yes, I do care!”…some might say, “Care for what?”. When I say, “Do you CARE?”, I mean this in a different way. For me, CARE is about Collaboration, Adaptability, Resilience and Empathy. I find those four words to be so important because I feel we are lacking this in society. There is a need to remember them. CARE supports an individual, team, organization, educational institutions and non-profits. The words just make sense and while four words can stand alone and we can understand what each means, let’s dissect those words an ..read more

Who is knocking on the door?
Sam Thiara
by Sam

I recently heard a knock on my door and when I went there and opened it, there stood four unknowns to me. They introduced themselves to me as Depression, Problems, Failure and Anger. They wanted to pay me a visit. They were polite because they wanted to come in but I took notice of each of them. Fortunately, I already had guests called Pyaar (love), Shanti (peace) Gratitude and Appreciation. I invited the four of them in and we sat down. I noticed that Depression, Problems, Failure and Anger were trying to sit closer to me, but I already had Pyaar, Shanti, Gratitude and Appreciation. There did ..read more

My Routine of No Routine: Out the Door!
Sam Thiara
by Sam

Often, I get asked, “Sam, what is your routine?” and this is because my schedule is very organic. My response has been, “My routine is to not have a routine!” For me, this best describes my days as I appreciate the opportunity to build out my schedule to what suits me. Today was no different. This morning, I showered, was going to make a cup of tea and sit behind my laptop to do some work. Easy enough, right?! As I was looking at the kettle and about to fill the water, I decided to forgo my tea and instead, venture out. I decided to head out on a mini adventure to hike Quarry Rock (which I had ..read more

Not What But Who – Defining Who You Are
Sam Thiara
by Sam

Who are you? You are not defined by ‘what’ you do, you are defined by ‘who’ you are. One is easy to explain and the other is very difficult. Why? Because we spend time telling people ‘what’ we do. It is sometimes the first (or somewhere in conversation) question asked at a dinner party or gathering, “So what do you do?” and then you politely tell the company and position. If you think about it, it is a rather superficial interaction and we have been programmed to do this because of the narrative we have lived most of our life. Right from preschool where we asked, “What do you want to be when y ..read more

Balancing the Scale for 2022 – Looking Beyond Good or Bad
Sam Thiara

As we leave 2022 behind and welcome 2023, I am left reflecting on the past while visioning the future while standing on the crack that we call the present. I am taking stock and if I have been able to balance the scales between the challenges and successes and have I emerged triumphant? Like everyone else, there are challenges and obstacles we encounter and often, we might say, “Good riddance to 2022 as it was not a good year.” It is easy to focus on the things that brought us down, but there are positive things that emerge out of our daily lives that remain shadows because of the difficult si ..read more

My Cultural Identity is Kitcheri
Sam Thiara

How I define my cultural identity? I am kitcheri. I was invited to a thought provoking event about ‘Fitting Into Citizenship’ which was about identity. Prof Solaylee wrote books called ‘Brown’ and ‘Return’ and they both resonated to me as someone of colour and I can relate to the thoughts shared. We go through life assuming a life but sometimes that life can be shaken at its core. For example, I have lived in Canada most of my life and it is a beautiful country that offers so much to me and the world. I am so grateful to be a Canadian; however, crowded into my life is that I was born in Englan ..read more

Moving Forwards and Backwards…At the Same Time
Sam Thiara
by Sam

In the stillness of my morning, a thought emerged. We are on a world that is moving forward through space and we are inhabitants that have no control of its direction…so then, why do we move backwards at the same time. We are moving forwards and backwards because the direction of the earth is set but the way we treat each other, impose our perceptions and divide the world, is moving us backwards. We take technological steps forward with science and advances by some of the brightest minds…and yet, we can not sit down and have a civil conversation because we have our own thoughts and ideas that ..read more
