Working at the forefront of this dynamic sector, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of mentorship on career development. The guidance, wisdom, and support provided by a mentor can significantly impact an individual’s trajectory, fostering growth, and success in the tech space (pardon the pun).

Upskilling to Thrive in a Tech-Driven World
Immigration and Skills Shortages: New Zealand’s tech sector has long relied on immigration to fill skill gaps. However, low levels of investment in upskilling existing staff persist. Training and upskilling require both financial and time commitments for employers, but without them, employees face slow career progression, leading to higher turnover rates. New Zealand Reserve Bank Governor Adrian Orr has apologised to Kiwis as we head into darker economic times this year. At the time of the release of the RBNZ’s Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) late last year, he told us to think harder about spending as New Zealand faces a year-and-a-half of zero or negative growth.
“We are sorry New Zealanders have been buffeted by these significant economic shocks and are experiencing inflation well above our central bank 1-3 percent target range,” he said. He added that labour has never been more scarce and that the employment participation rate is at re ..read more

It seems like only yesterday that New Zealand was celebrating a potential brain gain, with Kiwis returning home from overseas to weather the impacts of the Covid-19 coronavirus. However, with the rest of the world finally opening up to international travel again, it appears we’re now facing another threat to our economy: a new Kiwi brain drain.
In a paper to Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi in February this, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) estimated that 50,000 Kiwis could leave the country in the next year as the borders reopen, although this number coul ..read more

As a Client Manager at Techspace, I work with clients across many industries, sizes and technologies to find top IT talent. Over the past couple of years, all of my clients have felt the effects of Aotearoa’s IT candidate short market. As much as my job is finding qualified candidates for my clients, it’s just as much consulting with clients to share my knowledge on the market — including what it takes to actually secure good tale ..read more
