Listen to me gab with on one of MY fave history podcasts, Salem the Podcast! I was honored to join them for an episode and I know many of you will find their work fascinating. On their show, Salem tour guides and historians Jeffrey and Sarah take deep dives into the oft-dark, always-intriguing history of their town, its mythology and its obsessions. We have much in common in terms of how we approach research and how we unpack strange and beautiful stories. In this crossover episode, we speak about Elizabeth Lines and her daughter Mary, survivors who went on to spend much of their lives in Tops ..read more

Join me for a conversation with renowned actor Cotter Smith, who portrays Senator William Alden Smith in the new film Unsinkable: Titanic Untold. We discuss how he tackled playing this rather controversial Titanic figure, a man who spearheaded the United States Senate Inquiry in the immediate aftermath of the sinking; we also dissect how Smith has been treated in the ship's historiography and maybe why he’s not gotten the fairest shot. It was an absolute pleasure to meet Cotter. If you’d like to see Cotter and some of the cast and crew of Unsinkable in person, consider joining us for a screeni ..read more

As Titanic hit the online news cycles in some wacky ways this past week (Titanic II? Ok…), I pushed the Emergency Meeting button and called Pablo O’Hana, my dear friend and one of our foremost experts on Titanic’s artifacts, its cultural impact and its memorialization. This is a wonderfully meandering podcast chat about what it means to be in the Titanic community, what we all owe to the memory of its victims, and how we can all use our voices here to honor the heart and soul of the ship we love. I may use the word “like” 87 times here, but please forgive this unedited and passionate bit of ti ..read more

Join me for a rather joyful episode today as we look at the life of Artie Moore, Welsh-born wireless enthusiast-turned Marconi employee who began his career by picking up on Titanic's SOS calls from his tiny shack on his family's mill property.

As a podcaster, a historian, a human, I want to extend my deepest love and sympathies to the family of Nex Benedict in the wake of their untimely and preventable death. We have to ACT and SPEAK OUT against inequality and prejudice in this country. We cannot hide in the shadows or make excuses for our relatives or friends who quietly support hate in the name of God or their church or their privilege. Thank you to everyone who reached out yesterday on Instagram. This podcast supports trans youth, all youth, all children, all people, and this is a safe space forever.

Join me as I tell the tragic but beautiful tale of two of Titanic's honeymooners--the Marvins, a gorgeous and glowing young couple from New York. In a newspaper interview shortly afterward, Mary said, unable yet to process Daniel's death: “My God, don’t ask me too much. Tell me, have you any news from Dan? He grabbed me in his arms and knocked down men to get me into the boat. As I was put in the boat he cried ‘It’s alright, little girl, you go and I will stay a while. I’ll put on a life preserver and jump off and follow your boat.’ As our boat shoved off, he threw a kiss at me, and that ..read more

I am THRILLED to bring you an interview with Max Miller, whose YouTube Channel is a gorgeously innovative but also accessible look at the local and global histories of food and recipes across time and place. There are equal parts cooking and history! I'll link his Titanic-specific episodes just below, as well as his video for 400-year old Buttered Beere, which we discuss at the end. I'm so grateful we got to speak about his love of Titanic, what inspired/inspires him to to create Tasting History, and the beauty in the "mundane" details our textbooks have so often left out. Thank you Max, for g ..read more
