The Call to Act: Understanding the Impacts of Climate Change

The impacts of climate change affect all life on Earth. These impacts are putting pressure on our planet—on people and other living things, on economies and governments; making our societies as we know them increasingly vulnerable and proving an ever-increasing risk to the planet’s biodiversity. The gases released through burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas) create a blanket around Earth, trapping heat which creates more extreme and unpredictable weather. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense. As can be seen in the last few years, we experience longer droughts, longer and more ..read more

As a climate change consultancy founded over a decade ago, it’s been a long and somewhat slow road for corporate climate action in Australia. However, in the last 12 to 18 months we’ve seen a significant shift and momentum building across most industries for taking genuine and positive corporate climate action. Climate policy has turned a corner towards a more positive trajectory, finally giving business the certainty it needs to accelerate decarbonisation and innovation. There is a groundswell of voluntary climate action amongst local governments setting net zero strategies, SMEs going carbon ..read more

State of the Environment Report: An indictment but not a final verdict | Ndevr Environmental

What we must do now to improve biodiversity and community-outcomes   The latest State of the Environment (SoE) report makes for sobering reading. The report finds that the state and trend of the environment in Australia is poor and deteriorating, exacerbated by climate change, habitat loss, pollution, resources extraction, and invasive species. In the past two centuries, Australia has lost more mammals to extinction than any other continent.   Nearly 300,000 hectares of primary forest has been cleared between 2015 and 2019, and a larger area still of sparsely vegetated or non-woody v ..read more

The Differences Between Carbon Neutral and Net Zero | Ndevr Environmental

While businesses have become familiar with climate-related terminology in recent years, there is still some confusion surrounding key carbon neutral and net zero. This confusion is understandable — many people still use the terms interchangeably, but they actually refer to two different things. Understanding the difference between carbon-neutral and net zero claims, and how they relate to climate goals, is vital for businesses embarking on a climate action strategy.  What is Carbon Neutral? Carbon neutrality essentially means balancing the levels of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases (GH ..read more

Climate Impact X – the new Singapore carbon exchange Carbon trading has gained much attention recently following the release of detail on the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in June 2021 followed by strong progress on Article 6 at COP26 in November. Asian carbon markets have also seen significant developments, with Singapore recently launching its Singapore carbon exchange Climate Impact X (CIX), a voluntary global carbon marketplace and exchange. CIX is a joint venture between large financial institutions including the Development Bank of Singapore, Singapore Excha ..read more

Brisbane Floods, Climate Change and the Importance of Adaptation in Building Disaster Resilience | Ndevr Environmental

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report; Impacts Adaptation and Vulnerability was released late February this year. In the same week, over 23,000 homes were affected by a major flooding event in Brisbane, an event undeniably exacerbated by climate change. Although my work as a Senior Consultant at Ndevr Environmental centres around mitigating the causes of climate change, mitigation is only part of the picture. Regardless of how fast we manage to reduce emissions and curb climate change, adaptation is already a necessity to build resilience as disaster events a ..read more

2022 a Year for Climate Action

I wrote the 2020 end-of-year thought piece, looking to 2021 as a year of hope after the forced slow down in 2020. So, reflecting on 21 and looking to 22, did 2021 bring us hope? For most, given the pandemic is still disrupting previous ways of life, and there’s still politicians who think the world is flat, I’d say that hope may have been tested. Even the Hollywood movies have forgone the positive endings of clear skies in ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ and instead wiped out humanity for its inaction with a comet in DiCaprio’s ‘Don’t Look Up’. However, I’m an eternal optimist and there is always hop ..read more

2022 is finally here and we hope you are enjoying some time to chill out, tune out and regenerate.   Summer holidays can make a great time to catch up on reading, something many of us dream to do but never seem to get the time to. If you do manage to reward yourself with time to bury yourself in a book, I managed to get a few recommendations from our team before they headed off on leave, plus a few suggestions from me of books to read in 2022. There’s a handful focused on what we do – books on climate change and sustainability, books on energy and climate action, and a few other gems, spr ..read more

Article 6. What does the future hold for carbon offsets? | Ndevr Environmental

Risk and Opportunities from the Paris Agreement’s Article 6 The Paris Agreement’s last puzzle piece, Article 6, will again be debated at the 2021 Conference of Parties (COP26) in Glasgow. It provides for the creation of an opt-in voluntary international carbon market, and while many are hoping that it will finally be resolved in Glasgow, it is imperative that its carbon trading rules are well-designed. As proposed, Article 6 will effectively replace the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol. This may cause a phase-out of the workhorse Kyoto era offsets, that trade well below Austra ..read more

A Look at Australia’s Climate Change Bill and Why We Need it | Ndevr Environmental

In November 2020 Australia’s first formal Climate Change Bill, the Climate Change (National Framework for Adaptation and Mitigation) Bill 2020, was introduced into parliament. The proposed legislation outlined a reasonable and well-structured response to the existential threat posed by climate change and included a clear plan for reaching net zero emissions by 2050. Unfortunately in July 2021 the Bill did not pass the House Committee, however, independent MP Zali Steggall OAM, who is championing the implementation of this climate change legal framework in Australia, will re-introduce an amen ..read more
