Red Deer Rut

During the Month of October, I have always photographed the annual Red and Fallow Deer Rut at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire. Bradgate is my local patch as I only live ten minutes away from this beautiful park. So, I know the place well and know where to find the deer. Each year is different, and you don’t necessary find the deer in the same areas from year to year. Food availability is the key and that changes from year to year. This year it was a bumper crop of acorns and sweet chestnuts and so that affected the deer’s movements. I spent about three weeks covering the Rut and because o ..read more

During early July I was running a Natures images trip to the southern part of Alaska. This trip had been postponed because of the Pandemic but it had been planned so far in advance, it had seemed like years that we finally got to run it. Our main objective for this trip was to visit two locations where you can find good numbers of Brown Bears or Grizzlies. The two locations we visited were Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park and Lake Clark National Park, both are just superb for finding and photographing Grizzly Bears. Our first stop was Brooks Falls which I have to say I think is one of th ..read more

Svalbard Winter

Over the past couple of years, I have missed going to many locations but one place that I was desperate to get back to was Svalbard. I have been running trips to this beautiful Island Archipelago in the high Arctic for many years. These islands are the realm of the King of the Arctic, the Polar Bear. Most people that visit Svalbard go during the summer months and travel by boat as the Ice starts to break up in the fjords and you can access some of the remotest parts of the islands. It is a great way to look for Polar Bears and the other inhabitants of the islands. I also run trips this way ..read more

There are some species that just press the right buttons for me, and the Wolf is one of them. I have been obsessed with photographing Wolves for the past twenty years and I have had some amazing encounters over those years. Although fleeting, each encounter has been so special and has left a great memory in the bank. I am always looking forward to my next wolf encounter and so plan a lot of my trips so I can maximise my opportunities with this beautiful predator. During the pandemic I was unable to travel like everyone else and so it had put paid to a lot of my plans for the past two years ..read more

Churchill Polar Bears

Well, it has been a long time that I have been able to travel and run trips but slowly but surely things started to open up and one of the trips that Natures Images was able to get off the ground was our trip to Churchill in Canada. Churchill is without a doubt one of the best places in the world to see and photograph Polar Bears. Churchill is situated on the southern shores of the Hudson Bay and each autumn sees the arrival of this iconic arctic predator. The Ice in the Hudson Bay starts to break up in the late spring and by the height of the summer the Bears are forced onto land. During th ..read more

Badgers

One of my favourite Animals to see and photograph in the UK is the Badger. I have been trying to photograph this beautiful mammal on and off ever since I first picked up a camera. To be honest I never really felt that I had managed to really do them justice and although I had one or two shots, I was a little disappointed with my Badger portfolio and it has been on mind to try and rectify that for several years. So, over the past couple of years I have been spending a good amount of time in pursuit of images of them. At first, I tried to get going in Leicestershire near to my home at a couple ..read more

It has been really frustrating not being able to travel as I have had to cancel a lot of trips both with Natures Images and my own personal trips that I had planned. At first, I thought it would just be a few months like everybody else but the longer we got into the pandemic you started realising that this is going to be a long haul and it will take a long time to getting back to normality. Instead of dwelling on it though I wanted to be a bit more proactive and so keep my own photography ticking over. I looked at what I had done in the past or what I haven’t managed to do and started to pla ..read more

Dumfries and Galloway, a Secret Gem

It has been a really difficult time being a wildlife photographer during the pandemic as let’s face it we like to be out and about, enjoying the freedom and the nature that we search for. My little Garden project during the winter was a great move as it kept my hand in and at least I could achieve some new images. Since the restrictions started to ease, I have been travelling to many parts of the UK in search of new subjects to work with. One of my favourite places to visit is the Dumfries and Galloway area of southern Scotland. This area is a little secret gem of a place with so much wildli ..read more

At the back end of last year when we started to have rising levels in Covid19 again and the country was looking at another long lockdown I realised that I was not going to be going anywhere soon and was going to even find myself restricted in travelling around the UK as well. So, I set out on a little project in trying to photograph Garden birds and to be fair I have long been advising people to set up a feeding station in your garden or locally and it was time for me to practice in what I preach. My main goal in the project was to photograph Goldfinches as I had a good size flock in the are ..read more

It is nearly a year since we have had to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and as a wildlife photographer it has been an extremely difficult time and shows how our business model is open to such a pandemic to hit us. I have been working with a few subjects in the UK when we were not in a lockdown which has been great, but I have really missed travelling to some of the places that I usually go to on an annual basis. One destination that I have missed going to and I should be there now as I am typing this is Yellowstone National Park in the US. I love working in the winter in the northern hemisp ..read more
