Each year as the cherry blossom season concludes around the end of May, I begin thinking ahead to my annual Essence of Japan autumn leaves photography tour.  Autumn is truly a magical time.  The Japanese Maple tree among other species change colors to vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges, due to less daylight and cooling temperatures, definitely a reprieve from the summer heat.  Trees find a natural balance, and for over 25 years, I have been exploring, scouting, and have led ..read more

The Hokkaido Pony (Do-San-Ko) (Equus caballus) is an old breed, a tough horse that have lived in Hokkaido for hundreds of years, and they have the ability to survive the harsh Hokkaido winters in the wild.  The Hokkaido horse is believed to have been brought to Hokkaido during the Edo period (1600-1867) by fishermen who used them as work horses and for transportation.  The fishermen would return to the Japanese mainland in autumn and would leave the horses in Hokkaido during winter ..read more

My annual Essence of Autumn Photography workshop always includes Japan’s most iconic symbol Mt. Fuji. As does my annual Essence of Spring Cherry Blossom photo tour, as well as my annual Hokkaido Photo Tour.  In my opinion Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Parks in Japanese (富士箱根伊豆国立公園,) is a must visit for domestic and international travelers.  This national park was established on February 2, 1936, and is one of the first four national parks established in Japan, which consists of ..read more

For over twenty five years I have passed the Lawson convenience store in Fujikawaguchiko featured in this newspaper article. As a visual artist instructor/teacher of photography, I can understand why it would appear to be art to some photographers, but of all the times I have passed the store which has to be in the hundreds, I have yet to see a pro photographer taking a pic, its mainly kids on vacation with smart phones most likely on a tight budget, but lately we have even seen run of the mill ..read more

Currently, I’m leading my annual cross-country Cherry Blossom photo tour, and our first stop is Kofu in Yamanashi prefecture.  Kofu has always captivated me both for its breathtaking cherry blossoms and its rich samurai history.  One samurai lord (daimyo) is always part of discussions when Kofu is the topic, Takeda Shingen (武田 信玄).  The main shrine complex dedicated to Takeda Shingen used to be his residence and has spectacular Somei yoshino (Prunus yedoensis) trees ..read more

Due to the unique unique geographic and weather conditions which allow the sea of clouds to form on and over land, giving the impression of Nirvana dreamscapes, the ..read more

Once autumn arrives autumn Japan photography tours naturally focus on the wooded areas around the country, and these regions are defined by their balance.  In fall, the colored leaves from the forests and glades surrounding Japan’s iconic peak on the Mt. Fuji as well as Kyoto and Osaka, are famous all over the world, but there are so many more photo ops off the beaten path where trees seem happy to speedily transform into their fall incarnations and showcase the rich reds, vibrant ..read more
