We’re 1/4 of the way through 2024! Latest cool trip: Europe and Morocco in February Net worth: $820,618 It’s been a solid first quarter to the year, with an increase of $34,502 since January 1st. We also crossed the $800,000 barrier this quarter, which is a great milestone to reach. Our year-to-date spending is currently at $13,295, compared to $8,814 at this time in 2023. However, it is a totally unfair comparison, as we have done one big overseas trip already, where last year we didn’t get on an airplane until May. As a result, our savings rate is a little lower than usual, at about 50%, but ..read more

Wrap-up time! Here is our March Sankey: We’ve now reversed course from last month, as we’re back to our normal lifestyle versus exploring the world, finishing March with a 74% savings rate and a net worth increase of about $14,000, finishing the month at a net worth of $827,134. Notable things this month include: Mint is officially dead! We’ve signed on with Lunch Money for tracking and it’s basically fine. There are issues with importing transactions here and there which as far as I can tell are more the fault of the Canadian banking system. We spent a LOT on groceries! This is a result of ..read more

It’s time for another wrap-up! Our February Sankey: So it was basically the opposite of last month, but not unusual as far as our travel months go! We managed a whopping 6% savings rate as a result of spending a shit ton travelling to Europe and Morocco. However, our net worth increase was still substantial, reaching $813,036 as of today, an increase of about $16,000 from last month. Notable things this month include: A very epic and expensive vacation throwing everything out of whack. This is totally normal for us, and our spending and savings rate always balances out by year-end. I got a n ..read more

We’re freshly back from, vacation, and all our transactions have posted, so there’s a little of everything here – travel photos, travel budget, and my bonus Relevant Reads travel reading list (I have not mentioned it on the blog before, but I read A LOT). So come along as we recap a very epic vacation. All restaurants mentioned are vegetarian or vegan. We decided to set foot on Africa for the first time, with a trip primarily to Morocco. This is a great pick for a winter vacation from Canada because you can fly to Europe very cheaply at this time of year, and the European budget airlines can ..read more

In light of the impending demise of Mint, we’re going to be doing monthly wrap-ups so as to have a record of our financial details. Without further ado, January’s Sankey: We finished the month with a 60% savings rate and a $10,000 net worth increase, going from $786,116 at the end of December to $796,723 today. Notable things this month have been: We have two larger expenses here that are paid on an annual basis, our annual renter’s insurance, and our annual laundry costs. I add one flat annual estimate for laundry because our building has coin machines and I’m not going to start tracking lo ..read more

It’s that time of year again! We had another solid year, finishing at a net worth of $786,116, which is a $136,119 increase from last year. Our savings rate for the year was a solid 65% This year’s report is going to look a little different. Our beloved financial tracking program of 11 years, Mint, is about to kick the bucket, and we will likely have much less data and charts available afterwards. So to pay homage to one of the most useful free programs ever created, this year’s report will be loaded with all the Mint charts and graphs I’ve enjoyed for so long. But this first visual is my own ..read more

We’re now 3/4 through 2023, and it’s going well! Net worth: $725,032 Latest trip/labyrinth: That would be beautiful Kaslo, BC! Out net worth has held roughly steady since the summer, sitting at a current $725,032. Right now our spending for the year is sitting at $29,642, compared to $25,317 at this time in 2022. These will start to line up a lot more by mid-November, when we did our trip to Korea last year. That puts us at a current 61% savings rate, which will only increase as our overseas travel is finished for the year. If we retired today, our monthly income would be a respectable $2,416 ..read more

We are now halfway through 2023! Net Worth: $726,146  Latest cool place we’ve been: Latest Labyrinth: That would be Ghent, Belgium, and the beautiful Amiens Cathedral labyrinth. Despite taking a very expensive European vacation to England, France, and Belgium, our net worth grew nicely this quarter, increasing by $24,713 since April. Our savings rate is currently sitting at 59% for the year, but is heavily skewed downwards right now as we’ve done all our overseas travel spending for this year already, but still have half a year left to “amortize” it over. We’ll likely do some trips with ..read more

Time for our first quarterly update of the year! No new labyrinths or trips, sadly, but that will change soon. Net worth: $650,119 Our net worth dropped for the first time in awhile, but not by very much – we’re down from a high of $671,316 as of January 1st. However, our high savings rate has done a lot to offset the market drop. Our year to date spending is $8,612, right in line with last year’s $8,862 on this day. So far inflation has not really been a factor for us, as our spending has been very similar for the past several years. If we retired today, our monthly income would be $2,167/mon ..read more
