We had a great month! Final net worth: $901,640 Notable things this month: We had an 80% savings rate! That is definitely at the high end for us. Our year-to-date savings rate is currently 61%. We expect to maintain a fairly high savings rate for the rest of the year (barring disasters) since we’re done ..read more

Our July wrap-up! Notable things this month: We took a cruise to Alaska! This was obviously our largest spending category for the month, as we always shuffle transactions around so everything related to a trip is in the same month, regardless of when we actually booked it (in this case we booked our cruise excursion ..read more

We went on a cruise! Come along for a recap of our very fun trip to Alaska, with photos, our budget breakdown, and my special Alaska reading list. This was an unusual trip for us, as we were not the organizers – it was a large family group, and the cruise itself was a very ..read more

We’re officially halfway through 2024! Net Worth: $879,054 Latest cool place we’ve been: An Alaska cruise! (more on that in a later post once the receipts have all come in) Latest labyrinth: Grande Cache, Alberta We’ve had a great quarter, coming back from a fantastic Alaska cruise to find our net worth increased by $58,436 since our last quarterly update in April. We’ve also crossed the $850,000 barrier, with cookies to show for it, and are well on our way to the $900,000 milestone. Our year to date spending in currently sitting at $21,409, slightly less than last year when were ..read more

June wrap-up! It was a fairly typical month. Our net worth increased $14,477 from last month, finishing June at $854,983. We had a 55% savings rate, and our year-to-date savings rate is currently 58%. Notable things this month include: A vacation! I did a road trip/camping trip up north to check out Barkerville, find dinosaur tracks in Tumbler Ridge, and explore Jasper. Fun! That big electronics purchase? A brand new Kobo Color! My beloved Kobo finally died enough that it’s no longer feasible to bring travelling as it can’t hold a charge for any reasonable amount of time. Of course this happ ..read more

May Wrap-up! Another very different Sankey than previous months. Our net worth increased by just under $17,000, finishing May at $840,506, from $823,524 in April. We had a 74% savings rate for the month, and our year-to-date savings rate is 59%. We’re now getting into our summer travel season, but are expecting that be be pretty reasonable this year. Notable things this month: Our income was much higher than usual. This is simply the nature of self-employment. The variation can be huge month by month. Our biggest expense was Cel’s dental work, which we knew ahead of time was coming down the ..read more

April Wrap-Up! This is another great example of how wildly different our financial patterns are month by month. Our net worth has been holding roughly steady, finishing April at $823,524, compared to $827,134 at the end of March. We had a solid 62% savings rate for the month, and are at 52% year to date. We expect it to continue climbing, as our large expenses (trip to Morocco + Cel’s annual tax bill) are now done. Notable things this month: That’s a lot of restaurant spending! Fun fact: All three transactions were Vietnamese food. There was no real reason for it, we just really wanted lots ..read more

We’re 1/4 of the way through 2024! Latest cool trip: Europe and Morocco in February Net worth: $820,618 It’s been a solid first quarter to the year, with an increase of $34,502 since January 1st. We also crossed the $800,000 barrier this quarter, which is a great milestone to reach. Our year-to-date spending is currently at $13,295, compared to $8,814 at this time in 2023. However, it is a totally unfair comparison, as we have done one big overseas trip already, where last year we didn’t get on an airplane until May. As a result, our savings rate is a little lower than usual, at about 50%, but ..read more

Wrap-up time! Here is our March Sankey: We’ve now reversed course from last month, as we’re back to our normal lifestyle versus exploring the world, finishing March with a 74% savings rate and a net worth increase of about $14,000, finishing the month at a net worth of $827,134. Notable things this month include: Mint is officially dead! We’ve signed on with Lunch Money for tracking and it’s basically fine. There are issues with importing transactions here and there which as far as I can tell are more the fault of the Canadian banking system. We spent a LOT on groceries! This is a result of ..read more
